Current energy situation in Tanzania
Tanzania population 45 million 80% of Tanzanian have no access to
electricity.20% experience power rationing and black out.
More than 90% of populations depends on biomass energy resources for heating .(firewood and charcoal)
The Energy resources
• Energy sources -biomass, natural gas, hydro, coal, uranium, geothermal, solar and wind.
• Tanzania is expected to be 3rd largest producer of Uranium in Africa.(1st Namibia 2nd Niger).
• Tanzania has 5bln T of coal reserves– China’s Sichuan Hongda Co. Ltd. signed a $3 billion deal
to mine coal and iron ore and build a 600-megawatt coal-fired power plant.(2011)
– Tancoal Energy, a joint venture between Australian-listed Intra Energy Corporation and Tanzania’s government, runs the Ngaka coal project
The Energy resources
• Tanzania has discovered over 50.5 trillion cubic feet natural gas. Among the 10 largest producer in the World.
• Tanzania is potential for hydro power > 800MW• Tanzania is potential for wind energy-Hanang,
Singida, Mafia, Same >400MW• Potential for Geothermal energy >4,000MWe• Potential for solar energy enough solar radiation
The Energy Supply and Demand
• The current supply of energy is very low.• Tanzania is emerging economy county with GDP of
6.9.• Tanzania has 80% of 45 million population with no
access to electricity.20% with unreliable supply with power rationing and black out.
• Tanzania is bordered with 8 countries which are also emerging economy countries, with high demand for cheap and reliable energy.
• Industrialization and other on going big projects.
• Development of already discovered natural gas reserves.• Exploration of energy resources like Uranium, coal and
geothermal.• Development of services industry in upstream.• Manufacture and supply of equipments and machines in
energy sectors.• Collaborate with Government in human resource development• Infrastructure development• Consultancy services in energy sector.
Potential Investment opportunities.
