5 Things to Keep in Mind
When Facing Divorce
1. Don’t TurtleHiding only makes the problem bigger. Don’t put off
hiring an attorney when you know a divorce is going to happen.
You need advice now because the things people do while they wait often cause serious harm to their cases later on.
2. Don’t Jump the Gun
Just because you are angry doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time for a divorce.
If you aren’t sure, see a marriage counselor first, not an attorney. They can help you figure out if repairing the relationship is possible or if it’s time to move on.
Don’t Make Vengeful Decisions
You need to allow the process to be about what is best for you, as opposed to what is
worse for the other person.
When the anger subsides, you will regret your fury-fuelled decision making because
you will realize you didn’t put yourself first.
4. Don’t Compare Divorces
Your lawyer can tell you what the law is, how it
applies to your situation, and likely outcomes. If those outcomes don’t
match what Cousin Bettie got, that’s
probably because Cousin Bettie had different facts
to work with.
Yes, so and so may have gotten $500 a week in alimony for life. What they didn’t tell you about were the slew of legal reasons behind why that happened to them, but won’t be happening to you.
5.Trust Your Gut
If a lawyer makes you
uncomfortable at the initial
meeting, get a different lawyer. There’s no need
to make this process any less pleasant than it
has to be.
