HOTTEST TRENDS

DIGITAL ASSISTANTS

Digital assistants (like Amazon’s Alexa) were perhaps the most buzzed about products at CES 2017. This year marked a wide variety of third party devices entering the market with Alexa built-in such as speakers from Lenovo, 4K TVs, and Ford vehicles. Google is making a similar push with its Google Assistant, although on a smaller scale. While smart assistants will be everywhere in the near future, Alexa may finally provide the platform to unify all of our smart home gadgets.

IOT GETS PERSONAL

The Internet of Things (IoT) was the driving force behind a broad range of products announced at CES 2017 - which will result in a significant growth in the volume of consumer data available. From monitoring and managing sleep schedules to smart beauty products (like the Kérastase/L’Oréal collaboration who bring worldwide hair expertise, and Withings for a smart hairbrush), products are getting more personal. Brands are already beginning to define their data strategy to match data points and consumer insights based on these products, and this trend will only continue to grow.

SUPER-THIN TVS

Televisions are most definitely slimming down - with leading global manufacturers like LG and Samsung leveraging OLED technology to create devices that blend seamlessly into the living room or anywhere else in the home. While TV screens are getting thinner and thinner, some companies are working on screen-free futures altogether with laser projectors emerging as yet another possible viewing alternative… …get ready for your television to disappear!

XBR-AIE OLED

Page 25: memBrain STORM: CES 2017 Special Edition

Wearables were once again a popular trend at CES this year, with a focus on fitness and healthcare as well as fashion. Xenon’s e-skin is a lightweight shirt that tracks motion, and can be used for gaming, VR experiences, fitness, and healthcare. Nokia-owned Withings introduced the Steel HR, a stylish wristwatch that tracks activities, monitors heart rate, and acts as a sleep monitor. Fossil Brands offered the widest range of wearable tech at CES 2017, showcasing their products like a fashion range, with subtle designs and licensed brands like Marc Jacobs and Tory Burch.

Gaming continues to be a leading driver of innovation in both hardware and software. As demonstrated by Razer’s breakout gaming systems (mentioned earlier in this report) and ASUS’ ROG STRIX GL702 gaming laptop, manufacturers are tuning in to trends in gameplay into new features and product breakthroughs. With the demands of future gaming platforms (like VR) and Esports (poised to grow to $1B this year with an audience of 500M+), we anticipate that there will be new (and improved!) gaming platforms introduced annually from now on.

As anticipated, Virtual Reality (VR) was a predominant trend at CES 2017. Perhaps the most notable evolution of the industry, however, was the introduction of various new experience-enhancing accessories. While equipment costs continues to be a barrier for the mass adoption of VR (while AR makes significant advancements), this new crop of VR accessories demonstrates that developers are evolving the VR user experience in anticipation a much larger adoption of the platform perhaps sooner than originally anticipated.

FARADAY FUTURE:

FF91

Concept cars and autonomous vehicles flooded CES 2017. Standouts included the Tesla-competitor Faraday FF91 and the Chrysler Portal concept, which features a selfie-cam and facial recognition technology to automatically update entertainment preferences. Honda’s electric Neue concept combined driverless technology with ride sharing as it will operate as a part of a ride-sharing service when the owner is away. Toyota’s new Concept-i car is not only driverless, but features an AI assistant named Yui to help drivers perform tasks.

CONNECTED KIDS

LEGO:

BOOST

From sleep trainers and smart monitors, to wireless breast pumps and robot assistants, a bevy of products designed with parents and kids in mind debuted at CES 2017. From Lego’s easy-to-use robot building and coding toolkit (“Boost”), to Fisher-Price’s new Smart Cycle (an exercise bike with a tablet mount and accompanying app), to Kuri, a smart human-like robot positioned to be a “robo-nanny,” smart devices are decidedly becoming more kids and family-centric- and electronics are becoming more kids and family friendly.
