As a scaffold: Luke 16:1-9Just after the parable of the Prodigal Son…16 Then Jesus said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property. 2 So he summoned him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Give me an accounting of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer.’ 3 Then the manager said to himself, ‘What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. 4 I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes.’5 So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ 6 He answered, ‘A hundred jugs of olive oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.’ 7 Then he asked another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ He replied, ‘A hundred containers of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill and make it eighty.’ 8 And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. 9 And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes.

Lessons from the story… Luke 16:10-1310 “Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. 11 If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? – 1. faithfulness in small things12 And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? - 2. faithfulness in the business of others13 No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.” – 3. single-mindedness to the kingdom of God14 The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all this, and they ridiculed him. 15 So he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of others; but God knows your hearts; for what is prized by human beings is an abomination in the sight of God. – 4. Hence Jesus’ mission…Luke 4:18-19 (NRSV): Is 6118 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free,19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Now, lets consider 5 Pillars of Success in order of priority…1. Timing2. Team3. Idea4. Model5. Funding

Page 9: Built To Last

1. Timing…- Matthew 9:35-38 35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. - Ecclesiastes 3:1For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven

Page 10: Built To Last

2. The Team- The 3: the mount of transfiguration – Peter, James & John (Matthew

17:1-13)- The 12: Matthew 10:1-4- The 70: Luke 10:1-12

- Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships. - Michael Jordan

Page 11: Built To Last

3. The idea…Matthew 9:37-38 - Multiplicity of Preachers37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.

- A successful organisation always starts with a compelling business idea- Each idea, no matter how brilliant, initially has no commercial value- How do we spot a promising business idea:

• It fulfils a customer need – a problem is solved• It is innovative• It is unique• It has clear focus• It is profitable in the long term

Page 12: Built To Last

4. The Model…Matthew 10:5-155 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, 6 but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 8 Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. 9 You received without payment; give without payment.

…A business model isn't something you build from the ground up... It is simply, how you plan to make money or offer value or benefit?Questions to consider include: • Who's your target customer?• What customer problem or challenge do you solve?• What value do you deliver?• How will you reach, acquire, and keep customers?• How will you define and differentiate your offering?• How will you generate revenue?• What's your cost structure?• What's your profit margin?

Page 14: Built To Last

5. Funding…Matthew 10:8-159 Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts, 10 no bag for your journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for laborers deserve their food.11 Whatever town or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and stay there until you leave. 12 As you enter the house, greet it. 13 If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town. 15 Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

Page 15: Built To Last

Questions to consider…• What is the upfront costs you expect to incur when setting up your

business?• What are your sources of funds to pay for your upfront costs?• Have you got a schedule showing when you expect revenues to pour

in?

A thought…'Is it not undeniable that with the Bible in our houses, we are ignorant of its contents; and that hence, in a great measure, it arises, that the bulk of the Christian world know so little, and mistake so greatly, in what regards the religion which they profess?'

- William Wilberforce, A Practical View of Christianity
