VICTORIAN ERA1837-1901

The Victorian era of British history was the period of  Queen Victoria’s reign from 20 June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901.

It was a long period of peace, prosperity, and national self-confidence for Britain.

At the start of the Victorian era most fashions lasted about a decade, but by 1901 the history of fashion was moving in a yearly cycle.

CRINOLINE1830-1860

BUSTLES1870 -1883

In the 1830s a linen material woven with horsehair called crinoline (also called hoop skirt) was first used for cloth petticoats. The word crinoline comes from the French for 'crin' and 'lin', meaning horsehair and linen respectively.

When the crinoline of the late 1860s had reached its maximum extreme width it began to subside. It is a type of framework used to expand the fullness or support the drapery of the back of a woman's dress.
