Olivia Pope’s Best Fashion Moments on Scandal

Daria Ibn-Tamas

Dress by EscadaThis beautiful piece by Escada is a nod to the inner conflicts of Olivia Pope. The contrast of the black and white was intentional and was a subtle hint at how consistently back & forth Pope is between bad and good, says the show’s costume designer, Lyn Paolo.

Armani Pea Coat

A current staple in everyday fashion, the peplum style is in its prime. This lovely peplum Armani coat puts a chic and girly spin on your standard pea coat.

Elegant Lounge WearThe pairing of a Donna Karan sweater & La Perla Pajama pants makes for a comfortable, relaxed look that anyone would envy. Says the show’s costume designer, “"I was inspired by women in the '50 and '60s who would wear beautiful lounge wear to dinner parties and I wanted similar silk pants that you could wear out.”"

Max Mara Coat, Dorothy Gaspar GlovesAn undeniably beautiful look, but behind the scenes it was one that Kerry Washington & Lyn were hesitant to debut. “…this was the hospital scene where she was going to see Fitz—and would she have really taken the time to put on these long gloves?” Says Lyn. “And I just said, 'You know, it's a fashion moment and Olivia Pope can put herself together no matter what is going on in her life. I think we should go for it!'"

Louise Green White HatAs effortless as this hat may look, it took a while to find the perfect hat for this scene. Finally, Louise Green, who is a local designer in Los Angeles, custom made this piece. The feel was intended to be 80’s inspired, with a touch of classic gangster. Stylistically, costume designer Lyn Paolo says, “I think it's important to note that Olivia didn't pick this hat David did. I think Olivia would have picked something a bit more grand.”

Max Mara EnsembleAn unexpected twist in the style of Olivia Pope, Lyn wanted to do something interesting as this scene was a leap forward in time, and she hardly ever dresses Olivia in skirts or dresses. Similarly, the color was one they never experimented with before. The risk certainly paid off- it got fans talking and Kerry Washington wore it beautifully!

Jen Fares Couture GownThis breathtaking piece was a huge hit. However, as effortless as it may look on Olivia, it was an arduous process perfecting it for the show. Lyn was sent on a wild goose chase to hunt down this dress, tailor it smaller to fit Kerry Washington’s slight frame, and repair the extremely damaged hemline of the piece. Luckily, it was all worth it, because this look is not one fans will soon forget!
