You’ve just built a new house or moved into a new flat, and things are perfectly arranged. Things are within reach or can easily be found when you need them. Then again, over days and weeks of life passing by each member of the family accumulates more and more stuff until the day comes when you see a messy room, a disorganised living room and kitchen and stationery strewn all over the library or study.

What do you do when you’ve got tons of stuff lying about the house and you’ve no idea how to start organising them? Many mums and housewives are burdened with this problem but the skill and the desire to organise everything should be learnt by everyone who has a living area to call their own—be it a house for the family, a flat for the young professional or a student dorm room.

Seriously do you still expect mum to come over and tidy everything when you’re in your forties and already have teenage kids?

HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR GETTING RID OF THE CLUTTER:

Page 5: Organise things about the house with storage boxes, a label printer and protective envelopes

1. Take a look at everything and assign them into any of these categories:

Hardly ever used or not likely to be used again—things you would hardly miss when they’re gone such as old clothes, out-of-fashion bags, shoes and accessories, used paper, spent pens and cartridges, empty bottles and containers, etc.

Occasionally used—only needed during a specific period or situation. Examples are costumes and decorations used only during Holidays or special occasions, medical apparatus (except if someone in the house has a condition that requires them on a daily basis), sports equipment (unless you make it a daily habit to go snorkelling in the bathtub or play golf on your lawn), as well as documents pertaining to identity or ownership such as birth and death certificates, property titles, wills, etc.

Used daily—essential items you can’t go a day without and you don’t want to spend hours looking for. These include paper, pens and markers for students or people who need it for their business or home office, keys, mobile devices, etc.

2. Get rid of the stuff that doesn’t matter by placing them in the garbage bin, selling whatever you can, donating to charities or taking them to be recycled. Then you’ll only need to worry about the things that actually matter.

3. Gather the second category to be organised or filed and stored.

Important and confidential documents, photographs, electronic data storage devices like CDs, DVDs and USB are best kept in a safe, but should you find there are too many of them to fit one safe and too expensive to buy several safes to house all of them then protective envelopes are a good option for arranging contents before locking them away in a filing cabinet or drawer.

Protective envelopes are burst proof, tear and puncture resistant. They are also great for conserving space as they are compact and can fit almost anywhere. Print labels on the envelopes using a Label Writer or Label Manager before filing them away to make sure you can easily find a document or storage medium when you need it.

Put larger items in storage boxes, print labels on them so you’ll know what’s what and haul them away in the attic or cellar.

Labels are also very handy in the kitchen so you can easily tell between spices, grains and sweeteners.

Labelling the foods stuffed in the fridge is also very efficient such that when you open the refrigerator door you’ll know at a glance what you want to eat or use as ingredients for cooking without having to open containers.

You could print off labels from your pc/laptop but considering the costs of ink and the fact you may only need to label up one or two items at a time (therefore potentially wasting part sheets of labels), it might be worth investing in a thermal label printer like those produced by Dymo.

They are small, compact, perfect for ad hoc labelling and are an organisational freak’s best friend!

4. Make use of your desks, drawers, cupboards, shelves, hooks and racks to store things you’ll need every day.

Your style and method of doing so will depend on the available space, the items to be stored and any design considerations you might have which will affect the placement of furniture around the house.

Taking on everything at once may feel overwhelming, so you might want to de-clutter one room at a time or one type of item at a time to make the task less daunting.

Enlisting the support of the rest of the family is also very helpful. After all, everyone benefits from a clean and organised living space. You will also find that you maximise every available space when you de-clutter every now and then.
