Uniting In Matrimony Through Lavan With Meaning And Lyrics Of Four Lavan In Sikh Marriage
The four nuptial rounds during a Sikh wedding ceremony would have no significance if they are not accompanied by the recital of proper verses of the Lavan. These hymns were composed by Guru Ram Das and basically describe the significance and importance of the marriage. There are four verses of Lavan and they have all been derived from the scriptures of Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

First Verse
The first verse of Lavan says that for a Sikh the best state of life is married life. This verse basically instructs the couple to perform all their daily duties of married life with complete sincerity and commitment. It is also advised for the couple to opt for leading a righteous life, free from all sins, rather than simply reciting the various hymns of Vedic Brahmans. It is through good fortune alone that a man is able to experience celestial bliss and through this first round of the wedding ceremony, that Servant Nanak proclaims that the wedding rituals and festivities have begun.
Second Verse
The second verse of Lavan conveys the love that the wife feels for her husband because of which she leaves her former home and agrees to start a new life with the groom. The verse states that the Lord shows us the path for meeting the True Guru. It…

says that one should fear only the God as this fear will help in conquering all other worldly fears and also remove any ego present inside a person. The Lavan suggests that in this fear of the Lord; one should sing his praises and know that he alone is Supreme and master of the universe. Therefore, in the hope of meeting this supreme Lord, one must sing his joyous songs. In this second round of an and Karaj, servant Guru Nanak says that the sound of the divine resounds.

The third verse advises the bride to detach herself from the outside world, and dedicate herself completely to her husband. The mind fills with divine love and through good fortune, hope to meet the Lord. Sing praises of the Lord and uttering his words hope to find the Immaculate Lord. By describing the indescribable qualities of the Lord too one can hope to find the lord. The heart gets filled with the name of the lord and realization dawns that a man’s destiny is inscribed on his brows. Fourth Verse
The fourth verse describes the union of the couple in a spiritual manner so that nothing can ever come between them. The mind is at peace after having found the Lord and surrendered mind, body and soul to him. The Lord appears sweet to the one possessed by him and he is able to fulfil all his desires when the Lord’s name resonates within him. The bride is especially blessed by the Lord and her heart shall illuminate with his name in the future. Servant Guru Nanak proclaims attainment of the eternal Lord through this fourth round.
