The Contest

Let me tell you a story about Jeremy. Jeremy was a driven college student who wanted to find a better way to pay for his education without being in debt for the rest of his life. One day while on campus, Jeremy noticed this Scholarship Contest poster provided by 3M. All he would need to do is write a report about 25 useful 3M products and submit it online.2

Jeremy had all the qualities required to write a successful report regarding 3M products. He was a smart student, he was very motivated, he was inquisitive by nature, curious about life, and very driven to succeed. He thought he could ace this project in no time! He was very excited and rushed home to get started as the project deadline was approaching soon.3

Off to a good start!

Jeremy set out to identify 3M products in his home that he could write about. He looked around and found scotch tape, post-it notes and sponges with the 3M brand on them. He was off to a good start! No problem, this will be easy, he thought.4

Just then Jeremys sister Janet came home and was interested in helping him identify some products around the house. Sure, he said! I could use all the help I can get so I can get this done quicker! So together they started looking. 5

Having some trouble finding 3m

They looked around the various rooms of the house; the kitchen, the living room, the bedroom, etc. Somehow, it didnt seem to be as easy as Jeremy imagined to find more 3M products. His confidence started to wane a bit from his initial enthusiasm. 6

Its not as easy as Jeremy thought

They even looked in the bathroom, but still didnt find any 3M products! Jeremy was starting to get discouraged. This project wasnt as easy as he initially imagined it would be.7

Change of environment

They had some luck in the garage when they located some 3M masking tape and a bottle of 3M liquid car wax. But they still needed to identify several more products to win the scholarship prize. They decided to head over to the school lab to see if they could find anything there.8

All hope seems lost

Once in the lab, they looked around and to their dismay they couldnt locate any more 3M products. They started to become sad, this was MUCH harder than they thought it would be. It seems as if Jeremy wont win the scholarship after all.9

Frustrated and disappointed

Jeremy was becoming frustrated and disappointed. Oh! No! He may not be able to finish the scholarship contest after all.10

Time was running out!

Time was running out quick!! How was he ever going to gather the information needed for his report??11

Just then, professor Mitchell walked into the lab with some exciting revelations! He told Jeremy and Janet that 3M products were everywhere! Though 3M spends around $1.8 billion a year on research and development and employs 8,500 researchers in its labs world-wide, it is known to the public mainly for a few household and office products including Scotch tape and Post-it Notes Hagerty, 2015, para. 3). They just needed to know about the science!12

By creating materials that are components of products or enhance product usage, 3M actually makes products better. By using technology and innovation, 3M uses the magic of science to improve consumers lives across the globe.14

3M uses their science to make components of many of todays regularly used products such as batteries, furniture, cleaners, healthcare supplies, office supplies, crafts, safety, and even pet care products! Many of these items can be found around the home!16

3M makes thousands of consumer products that can be found around the house! These include items such as adhesives, electronics, medical bandages, window insulation, toilet cleaners, hooks, and more! You might not always realize it, but youre rarely more than 10 feet away from 3M Science. Its in cars, planes, homes, clothes - pretty much everything (3M, 2016, para. 1).17

3M: Hiding all over the place!

Jeremy and Janet were excited now! There are plenty of 3M products out there, they are just hidden all over the place! With the help of Janet, Jeremy went home to list these items created by science and write an incredible report for the 3M scholarship contest. Just maybe, he would win the prize after all!18
