Introduction
• The sea is man’s biggest hunting ground. Two third of the earth is covered with water and by far the most important food we get from it is fish .• Each year, over sixty million tonnes of fish are taken out of the sea
and there's a still a lot more to catch. The scientist say that over one hundred million tonnes of fish could be caught, without doing any harm to life in the sea.• The sea is like a giant larder; with common sense we can dip into it
forever.
• Fisheries sector is one of the important food production sector in the state contributing to the livelihood as well as food security of a large section of the economically underprivileged population. • Fisheries include marine, freshwater and brackish water. The fisheries
sector contributed 2680 crore to the GSDP (at 2004 - 2005 prices) during 2011 – 2012 in the state, which is 0.80 percent of the total GSDP. During 2011 -2012, the export of marine products reached 73991 tons valued at 2801 crore. • Tamilnadu ranked fourth in marine and sixth in inland fish production
in India in 2009 -2010
Tamilnadu coastal profile
• Tamilnadu with its 1076 km of coastline, 1.90 lakh sq.km of Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and a continental shelf of about 41412 sq.km is one of the leading producer of both marine and inland fish and fish products. • At present 6728 mechanized boats and 56792 traditional crafts (24160
vallams and 32632 catamarans) are engaged in the marine fishing. The marine fish potential is estimated at 7.00 lakh metric tons (L.M.T). There are 591 marine fishing villages and 363 marine fish landing centers in the state, with the population of 9.15 lakh fishermen of which, 2.60 lakh are actively engaged in fishing. There are three major fishing harbors and three medium fishing harbors.
Nutrition facts about sea foods • It is been said that if you want to stay young eat fish. This have never
been proved, but if you change the word “young” to “healthy” then it would certainly be true. • Every body needs protein to live and this is what makes fish so
important in our diet.
Statement of the problem
• The consumer preference of sea food products are highly heterogeneous. The fish preferred in one place would not be preferred in other place.•According to economics fish is considered to be open access
resources so it is difficult to predict the quantity of supply. • The variety of fish caught in one landing center will be
different from other. • There is no proper systematic supply chain existing for fish
marketing in India's domestic market.
• As India is a Hindu majority country people are very much conscious on consuming non veg the majority of them avoid taking fish on auspicious days this intern affect the fish market drastically.• As fish markets in India are unhygienic it affects the demand for
fish which directly affect the lively hood of fisher folks.
