Brand Spur is a monthly report to keep you abreast of the current event inNigeria within selected product category. The report contains importantinformation of happenings in the market and any other information relevantto the smooth and continuous operation of your business.Brand Spur helps you see your activities in the market place vis-à-viscompetition.
EditorialRecession in Nigeria is currently making manufacturers including brand gatekeepers and
Entrepreneurs rethink their stand so as not to lose their hold in the minds of the consumers
and subsequently their wallets.
While difficult times like this mostly favour big brands; smaller brands need to understand
that communicating the brand’s assets such as brand awareness, reputation (competence ,
benefits, attributes, etc.), imagery and deep values among others in an unequivocal manner
to remain unique(exclusivity), strong(saliency) and positive (desirable) ahead of competitors
(especially market leaders) is a major way to grow or sustain brand strength (market share,
growth rate, loyalty rate, penetration etc.). Brands in the height of recession thrive on efforts
put into marketing communication because consumers don’t just buy the brand name; they
buy branded products that promise tangible and intangible benefits which are created by the
manufacturer.
BrandSpur Ng exists to help manufacturers, brand managers, owners and entrepreneurs
sustain such efforts through provision of monthly strategic intelligence which will help them
find their footing in the rowdy marketplace ahead of competition.
This is the maiden edition, and in this issue, BrandSpur Ng shares intelligence on pertinent
issues ranging from the economy (inflation, commodity prices, forex policy etc.), agriculture
(Cocoa), events, brand activities and promotions across different sectors including FMCG,
telecoms, banking, automobile, we also included a corner on young budding entrepreneur’s
exploit.
The promise is to keep improving, however, we invite you to have a good read and you are
welcomed to share your thoughts with us via [email protected] to enable us meet your
expectations.
Gracias!!!

In a paper presented at a workshop organised by the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC)in Owerri on Friday, Jacobs noted that in spite of the high rate of fruit production and a thriving juice market, thecountry imported fruits concentrates. In the paper entitled “Promoting Investments in Concentrate Production,’’he said the situation resulted in an estimated loss of one billion dollars annually. Jacobs, represented by MrNwabueze Anyanwu, observed that Nigerian farmers also lost 60 per cent of their produce as a result of lack ofprocessing facilities. He listed other factors to include limited demand and logistics challenges such as handlingand transporting the fruits to the urban centres.

The survival battle Coke will have to fight…
So here am I, wittingly musing which is going to happen first: A drastic reduction in the price of the dollar, circulation of fuel in the countryor a change in Coca-cola Nigeria’s marketing strategy.Coca-cola is by far one of the most successful brands in the history of marketing. Since John Pemberton discovered the magic recipe, cokecontinues to play in a second to none market, doling out campaigns that not only change and upbeat the landscape but one way or anotherconnects deeply with their consumers. Quite remarkable is her effective use of human truths and insights that time and again appeals toconsumers’ emotions often making many berserk and head over heels on the brand.

Orijin is not a soft drink! It just cannot be. If it ever becomes, its sister is bound to beail. I also make bold to say here that Star Radler, a halfbeer, half soft drink cannot sit in that middle if it has to be aStar. Star is a beer. It cannot be a hybrid.
I will tell you why. A brand begins to do well and suddenly its minders begin tothink it was time to give it more responsibilities. It is justlike a woman who gives birth to triplets and the husbandbegins to dream of how she could also carry quintuplets.
It hurts.Brands sure have strong shoulders. Butthere is a limit to what should be placedon its head. Even trucks have loadlimits beyond which it becomes unsafeto drive on the roads…
Zeroing in on Orijin ZeroYou see, the burden we place on brands can be as heavy and as large as the space we create for them in our mindscan accommodate. This is because the DNA of brands exist more in the imagination than in the tangible thing wesee and consume.

Hollandia Vs Peak:
The Underlining Insinuations
In view of the raging war between leading milk brands, Hollandia and Peak, with the crux of the matter being
the use of ‘Wazo’ and ‘Wazobia’ respectively in their commercials, fresh information offers insight into the
seeming marketing debacle.
HollandiaEvap 65g pack that retails for N50 in its commercial finds expression with the saying which claims good
things come in small sizes. Although, the N50 price mark is never an exclusive preserve of the brand or its
promoters, as other similar brands sells at same price point, the Hollandia ‘Wazo’ pack has the advantage of an
extra 15g more. Therefore, the commercial in questionwas structured to tell consumers in a big way that
HollandiaEvap 65g is the Correct Wazo Milk a sources hinted explaining how the ‘Wazo” tag came about
dispelling insinuations of violation.
