Government Advertising Tax 1700
By the 1700's, taxes were being imposed upon advertisements
by the government
Between 25-75% of the content of papers in London were
composed of ads

The First Magazine 1731
In 1731, the first magazine, The Gentleman’s Magazine, was published in London

Notable Events of 1776
Adam Smith published “An Inquiry into the nature and causes of the wealth of nations,” which promoted the idea that specialization was central to economic success
Brand owners were already good at making stuff and encouraging new streams of demand
Agencies were good at finding brand stories and fertile audiences to capture that demand
“Old media” created stories that educate and entertain, “new media” perfected new forms of distribution and discovery

Billboard Advertising 1867
1867 Earliest Recorded Billboard Leasing occurs
By 1870 nearly 300 small sign-painting and bill posting companies were in operation
In 1891 the Associated Bill Posters’ Association of the US and Canada was formed in Chicago, now known as (OAAA) The Outdoor Advertising Association of America
Incidentally, the first billboards did not stand up when exposed to the elements for a prolonged period of time
