DESCRIPTION

How Smart Brands Make More Money: Exploring Brand Premium
Recession focuses everyone price but for most brands selling at a lower price is not a recipe for success

How we represent brand strength
11
Index: 100
Meaningful Different Salient Power 1. First we plot how important Meaningful,
Different and Salient are in explaining Power
within the category, as in a pie chart.
3. We overlay an ‘average’ circle (100) so you
can see how the brand is performing
compared with the category.
4. The final circle at the centre indicates the
brand’s Power, the likely share of market of
the brand based purely on predisposition
152
168
95
16.4
2. We then add how strong each brand performs
on each of Meaningful, Different and Salient.
The numbers are indexed against the category
average.

The Premium checklist
23
Brands only retain their value as long as you treat them as valuable.
Do not sell your brand short.
1. Stick with the strategy that will generate the most sustainable profit stream for your brand: value or premium pricing.
2. If premium, does your brand already have the strength to sustain a price premium among your target audience or do you need to challenge perceptions?
3. To challenge perceptions, make sure you know what will make your brand meaningfully different from the competition.
4. Amplify that meaningful difference in all that the brand does, including point of purchase.
5. Use activities and cues that create differentiation and support premium associations in your product category.
