The Enterprise Initiative Scheme (HMRC)

What is an EIS (Enterprise Investment Scheme)?

The Enterprise Investment Scheme is a government sponsored scheme offering a range of attractive benefits to

investors that hold qualifying investments for at least three years:

30% income tax relief for investments up to £1,000,000 p.a., reducing net cost to investors to 70p per £1 invested

Tax Free Growth – no capital gains tax payable on gains realised on disposal of investment

Loss Relief – If EIS shares are disposed of at any time at a loss (after taking into account income tax relief), such loss

can be offset against the investor’s capital gains or income in the year of disposal or the previous year. For gains offset against income tax, the net effect is to limit the investment exposure to 35p in the £1 for a 50% taxpayer if

the investor realises a total loss. Alternatively, the losses can be offset against Capital Gains Tax at the prevailing

rate of 28%

Capital gains tax deferral – capital gains can be deferred up to amount subscribed for shares. Applies to gains

arising three years prior to, and one year after, the issue of qualifying shares based upon a number of assumptions

including the personal circumstances of an investor and availability of EIS relief at 30%.

Inheritance Tax Exemption – EIS Investments are generally exempt from Inheritance Tax after two years of holding

the investment.
