What is ‘Mobile-Friendliness’? According to Google, sites are eligible to be identified as mobile-friendly in Google search results if they:

• Avoid software like Flash that is not common on mobile devices

• Use text that is readable without zooming

• Fit content to the screen, so users don't have to scroll horizontally or zoom

• Place links far enough apart so that users can easily tap the right one without error

• Mobile drove over $8B in revenue in 20141

• Half of ecommerce traffic is mobile

• 70% of a customer’s engagement time with your brand is digital2

As of April 21, sites deemed mobile-friendly are ranked higher in Google search results than those who don’t make the cut. If your rank suffers, your revenue will follow.

While the approaches used by those sites that pass the

mobile-friendliness test are split largely between separate

mobile sites, responsive design and responsive design with

server-side components (RESS), the majority of retailer sites

that failed the mobile-friendliness test all have one thing in

common – they’re simply repurposing their desktop

experiences on mobile.

Methodology : We ran all 1165 of the domains belonging to the 2014 Internet Retailer 500 (the top 500 North American ecommerce companies) through Google’s Mobile Friendly URL test and manually vetted the results.
