EDITORIALS

• usually written by the senior editorial staff or publisher of the publication, in which case the opinion piece is usually unsigned and may be supposed to reflect the opinion of the periodical/daily paper.

Columns

• Other opinion pieces may be written by a (regular or guest) columnist.

• the opinion expressed is that of the writer (and not the periodical/paper).

• Not all columns are opinion pieces.• For example, columnists may write columns

that are just fact describing or appraisal of good deeds.

Op-eds

• An op-ed (abbreviated from "opposite the editorial page")

• opinion piece that appears on a page in the newspaper dedicated solely to them

• often written by a subject-matter expert.• Op-eds may be solicited by the editorial staff, but

may also be submitted by the author for publication.

• … any opinions expressed are those of the author.

Letter to the editor

DEFINATION ???• Letters to the editor are written by readers of

a newspaper, magazine, or other source, on topics relevant to the publication’s audience.

HISTORY

• LTEs always have been a feature of American newspapers.• 18th century : LTEs were widely used and hard to

differentiate between letter and news.• 19th century : LTEs were increasingly centralized near the

editorials of newspapers.• 20th century : LTEs had become permanent fixtures of the

opinion pages.• 21st century: Internet had become a delivery system for

many LTEs via e-mail and news Web sites. (suspicious anthrax powder)

LENGTH of LTE

• Most publications suggest length limits ranging from 200 to 500 words.

REMEMBER• The letters chosen for publication usually are

only a sample of the total letters submitted.

Anonymous letters

• Many editors will allow the publication of anonymous letters where the details of name and address of the author are not printed, but are disclosed to the editor

What includes in letter ???

• They address diverse topics, from commentary on local, state, national, and international current events, to responses to opinions and stories previously put forth in the publication.

• Supporting or opposing a stance taken by the publication in its editorial or responding to another writer's letter.

For eg…

• Numerous reader criticize GEO/Jang group for its policy against ISI and Army.

• Daily Nawai Waqt was heavily criticize on Salman Taseer issue.

• Dunya was heavily criticize on Iftikhar choudhry issue.

Misrepresentation

• Submitting a letter under a false name in support or to criticize an opponent can have significant consequences.

• Shill… double agent… or so on…

• What PTI did for PMLN .. PMLN did for PPP in 2007.
