CHEVRON: a company ubiquitous in the world

Page 3: Folleto chevron en _el mundo_fin_ingles 2

Chevron is present everywhere in the world

Under this name or the name of one of its subsidia-ries, it extracts natural resources and sells them in 37 countries. It participates in oil, gas or mining exploita-tion projects in several other countries that are not in their official appearances as in the Republic of Iraq. It also sells over 150 products all around the globe.

In several of the countries where it exploits natural re-sources, the people of the concerned areas have de-nounced irresponsible practices. Sometimes Chevron was convicted, sometimes not. And the complaints from the affected citizens still stand.

In Ecuador, Chevron applies a strategy of repeated lies avoiding its obvious responsibility for the contamina-tion of the Amazon.

Discover the reality of the presence of Chevron in the world. Learn the TRUTH about the environmental cri-me in Ecuador. And let’s denounce Chevron together!

From several countries, they denounce CHEVRON for environmental damage

Same causes, same effects

Thousands of citizens in several countries around the world accuse Chevron of environmental damage.

They denounce devastation of agriculture, fishing, des-truction of rivers and vital water sources for the commu-nities, as well as high levels of poison in the air.

Many of them agree that Chevron not only does not as-sume its responsibility, but also denies the environmental damage caused where it exploits the natural resources.

Below you will find some testimonials from these citizens.

Testimonials: How can CHEVRON continue to deny?

This is what Chevron has left here in the Amazon. Now, six years later, look: this is one of the three waste lakes that were made by Texaco-Chevron. This is the clo-sest one. But it is only one of the nearly thousands lakes of crude oil.

In the first place, the en-vironment has been devastated; agriculture and fishing for the life of the community have been affec-ted by the daily oil spills. Oil was spilled on farming land, it was pou-red in the rivers, in the streams, and these water sources are the sustenance of many communities in the Delta region in Nigeria.

This is an international struggle and by uniting the peo-ple of Ecuador through the publi-shed announcement today in full page of the newspaper, it is a very powerful message and Chevron will know, has to know, that this is serious.

On September 24th at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York, the Ecuadorian government, through the voice of its Mi-nister of Foreign Affairs, Economist Ricardo Patiño Aroca, made the TRUTH about the environmental damage caused by Chevron-Texaco in Ecuador known. A former employee of Texaco was invited to give his testimony in this regard. We invite you to read it.

Foreign Minister, Ricardo Patiño

The voice of truth was heard in the

unconvincing practices that are costing us today not only a battle in the cultural and social fields.[…]Then we realized that they created a company called “Texpet”, Texaco. And they did not want to recognize that this company belonged to them but they paid us our salaries as Texaco. Thus, in the decades of, especially the 70s and 80s and until they left in the 90s, there were many abuses, not only to human health, but to the people themselves, because we were ruled by them and not by the authorities.[…]We do not want money, we do not want cash, we only want two things, gentle-men: we want water, because it is not possible to take water in the area. It is contaminated. Even if the local authori-ties want to give us water, they cannot, everything is contaminated, even the air. We want water and justice, nothing else. Justice.Because today not even farming is wor-king. What is it worth to have calloused hands. But agriculture does not give us what it used to. Our families get sick all the time and while this insane practice of Chevron, formerly Texaco, continues, nothing will be good.

[…]But they were the ones giving everyone orders, not only to Ecuadorians working there, but to all the people who came from other countries. Pardon my redun-dancy, and today they want us to pay all the irresponsibility of this company? It is not fair. It is not justice. I repeat: we want water and justice, not money. We want a social and environmental reme-diation.[…]

Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa launches the international campaign “The Dirty Hand of CHEVRON”

Page 14: Folleto chevron en _el mundo_fin_ingles 2

Chevron says: “President Correa pro-vided a distorted and inaccurate ac-count of the history of these oil fields (the wells of Lago Agrio) and who is responsible for any environmental impact.”

It’s a lie! Texaco was the sole ope-rator of oil exploitation in the Ama-zon region until 1990. It carelessly poured formation water (with oil residues and other toxic waste) into the Amazon region. It clearly had to undertake remediation of the envi-ronmental catastrophe caused by its actions. Chevron-Texaco is obviously responsible for the environmental damage caused in the region. There are plenty of witnesses and eviden-ce.

Chevron says: “Any environmental impact in the region is the sole and full responsibility of Petroecuador, a fact that the authorities of Ecuador have recognized publicly and private-ly on several occasions”.

It’s a lie! The authorities of Ecuador have never “admitted” such a thing. It is a distortion of the facts. The con-tamination denied by Chevron is a di-rect result of Texaco’s oil exploitation and of a poor remediation technique that is far from fulfilling its objective and continues to cause harm to the people and the environment

IT LIES ABOUT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF CHEVRON-TEXACO TO BLAME OTHERS

One of Chevron’s strategies is declaring that the oil company Pe-troecuador is responsible for the environmental damage caused by Texaco. There are plenty of witnesses of the crime. Chevron does not hesitate to attack President Rafael Correa saying….

Page 15: Folleto chevron en _el mundo_fin_ingles 2

Chevron says : “Any environmental impact on the extinct consortium area is exclusive to Petroecuador, which for more than 20 years, conti-nues to operate here”.

It’s a lie! TTexaco drilled and opera-ted 356 oil wells and opened 1.000 pits without any type of recoating. Texaco threw all kinds of waste in them, which caused immeasura-ble environmental damage. The US Company did not apply any effective remediation techniques, not even for the 162 pools that they promised to clean. The damage is still visible, as shown by President Correa, who put his hand into well AG-4 on Tuesday, September 17.Up until today pools are still being discovered that were being kept hidden by Chevron-Texa-co instead of remediated, which was in fact required.

Chevron says: “The Permanent Court at the Hague exempts Chevron from its responsibility for the environmental da-mage in Ecuador”.

The truth is: With total lack of ethics and transparency, Chevron says that the company has been released from environmental claims in Ecuador, which is absolutely false. The partial award of the Court at the Hague does not even touch the environmental damage issue!

Chevron says: “The Court found that the Settlement and Release Agreements that the government of Ecuador ente-red into with Texaco released Texaco and its affiliates of any liability for all public interest or collective environmen-tal claims.”

The truth is: the Court rejected the argument of the oil company because this Agreement implicitly contained a “release of responsibility” clause or in-demnity clause that, according to the multinational company, would hold the Ecuadorian State responsible for any costs incurred by Chevron or the effects of any decision declared against it. In fact, it is important to remember that Texaco was never released of its envi-ronmental responsibility in Ecuador. The Deed of Settlement that was signed in 1998 by the government of Jamil Ma-huad released Texaco from any claims of the Ecuadorian State but not of in-dividual claims. It was not a waiver on behalf of third parties.

CHEVRON LIES ABOUT THE TEXT OF A PARTIAL ARBITRATION!

On September the 17th, 2013, the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Hague yielded a partial award on the “Chevron III” case, the third law-suit of Chevron against the Ecuado-rian State. This award does not refer to the environmental damage at all. Despite this…
