第10回「お地蔵さまの由来」（2011年9月）

浄土宗別院の正門のすぐそばに地蔵菩薩像が立っています。地蔵菩薩はもっとも人気のあ

る菩薩さまで，本当にたくさんの石像がお寺や路傍に造られました。そのお姿は私たちの生活の

中にとけ込んでいて，私たちは親しみを込めて「お地蔵さん」「お地蔵さま」とお呼びしていま

す。

地蔵菩薩は大地の守り神が起源とされます。お地蔵さまは，お釈迦さまが亡くなられてか

ら弥勒菩薩が次のブッダとしてこの世に現れるまでの間，現世の全ての生き物を教え導く菩薩さ

まとして信仰されました。その姿は，頭を丸く剃り質素な衣を着ていてお坊さんと同じです。お

顔はいつも微笑みをたたえています。一般的には，左手には宝珠をとり右手には錫杖を携えてい

ます。これらの像形は，お地蔵さまが，世界の隅々を歩き回り，私たちの苦悩を癒し幸福をもた

らして下さることを示しています。経典には，地蔵菩薩が，地獄・餓鬼・畜生・修羅・人・天の

六道に姿を表し，悩み苦しむ衆生を救済しようと発願されたとあります。さらに，一切の衆生を

救いとるまでは，自身は涅槃に入らないと宣言されました。つまり，お地蔵さまは，生きとし生

けるものを救いたいという慈悲ゆえに，六道輪廻の世界にとどまり救済活動に自らの身を捧げて

いるのです。

お地蔵さまは，この世だけでなく過去に亡くなられた人間や動物の罪障をも消滅させて，

平安へと導く菩薩さまとして篤く信じられています。もっとも救われがたい存在にこそ優先的に

救いの手を差し伸べる慈悲深いお方です。宮沢賢治の「雨ニモマケズ」に歌われるような無私の

精神をもった，仏教徒にとって最高のお手本の一人といえるでしょ。

Vol.10 “Who is O-Jizo-sama?”

You can see a statue of Ksitigarbha (Jizo) by the gate of Jodo Mission. He is one of the most popular Bodhisattvas, and the number of his statues is the largest in Japan. Most people feel a closeness to Jizo, fondly calling him “O-Jizo-san” or “O-Jizo-sama.” Who is Jizo? Why is O-Jizo-sama so popular?

Originally, Jizo is believed to be the guardian of the earth. He protects all beings in the world from the time Sakyamuni Buddhapassed away until Maitreya (Miroku) will appear to become the next Buddha. Jizo has been worshiped as a great leader for Buddhists during Buddha’s absence. Most Jizo figures have a bald head and wear plain garments just like a Buddhist monk. They always smile gently. They often hold a jewel in their left hand and a long staff in their right hand. These characteristics show that Jizo walks any-where and fulfills people’s wishes with great compas-sion. In the Sutra, Jizo made an original vow to save all living

things. Jizo also vowed not to become a Buddha until his work of salvation is done. That is to say, he has voluntarily stayed in the cycle of rebirth and worked hard to save all beings in the six destinies.

O-Jizo-sama protects the weak and gives prior salvation to them. In eve-rything, he counts himself last and puts others before him. The compassionate Jizo is a good example for Buddhist ministers and members.

第11回「お地蔵さまと子供たち」（2011年10月）

地蔵盆は一連のお盆の行事の締めくくりです。京都では，地蔵盆は子供たちのお祭りと

して有名です。子供の健康と幸福を願って，色とりどりの提灯が飾られます。今回はお地

蔵さまと子供たちのお話です。

地蔵菩薩の石像には一目で分かる特徴があります。お地蔵さまは，赤い頭巾をかぶり，

よだれかけをかけています。これらは子供を亡くした親御さんが着せてあげたもので，お

地蔵さまは子供たちをお浄土へ導く存在として大切にされました。仏教と縁がなく不慮の

事故で亡くなった人は，地獄に堕ちてしまうといわれます。なかでも，子供の命は功徳を

積むにはあまりにも短いものです。「地蔵和讃」では，賽の河原で子供が鬼にいじめられ

る様子が描かれます。子供たちは三途の川を渡れず苦しみ続けますが，ここで地蔵菩薩が

現われて，鬼から子供を守って救い出します。こうして子供たちは救済され，極楽浄土へ

と導かれるのです。

かつて子供の死亡率は高く，幼くしてわが子を亡くす人も少なくありませんでした。亡

児の冥福を祈る親にとって，地蔵菩薩は最後の頼りの綱となり，その悲しみを癒しました

。地蔵菩薩の大いなる慈悲は，不幸にも命を落とした愛しい人々を苦しみから救い出し，

遺された人々の無限の信仰をあつめました。お寺の境内をはじめ至るところに，子供の無

事な成長を願って，お地蔵さまが建てられました。そして今もなお，多くの人々に愛され

ています。写真は浄土宗大本山の増上寺（東京都港区）の「千躰子育地蔵尊」です。

Vol. 11 “O-Jizo-sama and Children” (Reprint from Oct. 2011) The Jizo Bon ceremony is the finale of the Bon season. In Kyoto, Jizo Bon is well

known as the festival for children. People display lanterns (chochin) to wish for children’s health and happiness. Why is Jizo Bon for children?

O-Jizo-sama is distinct from other Buddhist saints. Many stone Jizo statues wear a red baby cap and bib, offered by members, because they believe Jizo helps deceased chil-dren go to the Pure Land. Jizo is known as the guardian of children because people believe the following story: When a person has no relation to Buddha’s teaching and dies suddenly, he/she will not be saved and will go to hell. Among them, a baby’s life is too short to do good deeds as a Buddhist. When babies pass away, they remain in an intermediate state because evil ogres interfere with their progress to a final destiny. That is why people believe that de-ceased children cannot move on to the better condition of Perfect Peace. Here Jizo appears before suffering children and protects them from the ogres. Then Jizo leads the children to the Pure Land.

Children’s mortality rates used to be high, and it was common to lose children. Jizo is believed to be the last resort to save children. The great compassion of Jizo comforts

parents’ deep grief and people have true faith in Jizo. He can help and save the unfortunate people who may have fallen into hell, or the worst destiny. Thus, Jizo has been worshiped by people who have lost their loved ones. In Japan, many, many O-Jizo-sama statues have been built as guardian deities at the temples and at the boundaries of the towns. Peo-ple offer items such as caps, bibs, flowers and even toys. I would like to thank Jodo-shu staff for sending this picture of O-Jizo-sama to share with you. It was taken at Zojoji Temple in Tokyo.

Oahu Rengo Fujinkai honors its Keiro members Oahu Rengo Fujinkai Convention occurs each year. The Fujinkai ladies from Haleiwa and Honolulu meet regularly each year. They elect officers each year. Each year the ladies take turn in hosting. This year the Haleiwa ladies came to Honolulu. Next year it will be Honolulu’s turn to go to Haleiwa. Over the years, wonderful friend-ships have come from these yearly meetings. As time goes by though there are fewer and fewer members. These women are in their eighties and nineties. Look how happy they are to be recognized as Keiro!!

Funeral Service for The Late Reverend Yuzen Yutaka Imamura

A funeral service for The Late Reverend Yuzen Yutaka Imamura was held on April 28, 2012 at Wailuku Jodo Mission. Rev. Imamura was 77 years old. He was the second son of the late Rev. and Mrs. Isuzu Imamura who was the resident minister of Wailuku Jodo Mission. [Note: The photo to the left is a much earlier photo of Rev. Imamura, probably when he was assistant minister at Wailuku Jodo Mission.]

On September 16, 1950 Rev. Imamura had received the Tokudo Precept from the Archibishop Benkyo Shiio of the Zojoji Temple at the Wailuku Jodo Mission. In 1953 after graduating from Baldwin High School, he went to Japan to study Buddhism at Taisho Buddhist University in Tokyo. He stayed at the Grand Zojoji Temple under the supervision of the Archbishop Shiito. After earning a bachelors degree in Buddhist studies, he furthered his studies earning a master’s degree in 1960. Rev. Imamura returned to Hawaii on May 31, 1960 and was assigned as assistant minister of Wailuku Jodo Mission. While serving at Wailuku, he furthered his studies at the University of Ha-waii at Manoa in religion and philosophy. Because of his schooling, his dharma talks were impres-sive and praised by many.

The late Reverend Yuzen Yutaka Imamamura (cont’d)

Both Rev. Imamura and his father established the golden age of Wailuku Jodo Mission’s his-tory. In 1969 with the dedication and sacrifices of the Imamura family, Wailuku Jodo Mission purchased the adjacent property and built an 18 unit apartment building to secure the financial foun-dation of the temple. In 1981, Rev. Imamura followed his father and became resident minister of Wailuku Jodo Mission and served until July 2000. He tirelessly served the members of Wailuku Jodo Mission and the Maui community. He passed away peacefully on April 1, 2012 at Maui Memorial Medical Center. He is survived by his brothers, their spouses and children: Brother Akira, his wife Betty and their children Akane and Sally, and Sally’s children Zoe and Jared. Brother Hiroshi, his wife Susan and their sons Fred and Mark, Mark’s wife Wendy and children Fred, Tristin and Austin. The funeral service was performed by Bishop Gensho Hara, Hawaii Council of Jodo Mis-sions. Assistant officiants were: Rev. Yubun Narashiba, Oahu ‘Sanmu’ Representative, Rev. Kosen Ishikawa, Kauai ‘Sanmu’ Representative and Rev. John Cho-on Hara, Jodo Mission of Wailuku. Wailuku Jodo Mission as well as Hawaii Council of Jodo Mission are very grateful for the contributions and dedication of Rev. Yuzen Yutaka Imamura and Rev. Isuzu Imamura.

Sunday School Students get-ting ready for an egg hunt. The students had a lot of fun looking for hidden eggs. Photo on left shows they are on their way as they see the hidden eggs. Everyone has a huge bucket to put the many eggs they will find.

Buddha Day Celebration on April 8

The Hawaii Buddhist Council Buddha Day Celebration was held on April 8 at Nichiren Mission of Hawaii. For entertainment, the Hawaii Ma-tsuri Taiko and Somei Taiko

Stuart Nago and Rev. Kanjun Nakano performed one song on April 29th which Stuart Nago composed the music.

MINI CONCERTS

Stuart Nago brought one of his students Noel Jaderstrom on May 6th to perform some Portuguese music. Noel Jaderstrom also brought some Portuguese instruments.
