Tribunes “Protectors of the people”
• Peace Keepers• Well Protected• Held great power on behalf of the plebs• Could veto any laws passed by the senate
Assembly of Plebs “comitia plebus”
• Presided over by tribunes • Expanded democracy by allowing plebs– To elect certain officials– Try plebian criminal cases – Pass legislation
Censor “census taker”
• Created to relieve consuls of census taking duties
• Two censors • Census was needed for collection of taxes and
organizing military duties
Branches of Government
• Executive Branch “ Consuls” • Legislative “ Assemblies and Senate”• Judiciary “ Courts”
Twelve Tables
• Created to avoid arbitrary decisions • Plebs Demanded laws to be put into writing• Punishments for breaking laws were harsh
Senate
• Ten years of military experience required • Once elected in for life
Consuls
• The senates two chief executives • Served as commanders and chiefs for the
military
Dictator
• Had absolute rule under emergencies • Temporary people in charge
Side note: Consuls and Dictators could veto each others decisions
Conflicts of the orders
• Period of time when the roman citizens struggled against each other and represented government
• Aristocratic class “Ruling Class” and the plebeians
Praetor
• Put in charge of judiciary branch• Led armies when needed
