Recently, two large scale con- struction projects in the Los Angeles/ Santa Monica areas used Acoustifence to minimize construction noise. With much new development go- ing on in these regions, often neigh- bors may feel like they are being en- croached upon by the effects of new construction activity and construc- tion related noise. Acoustiblok, Inc.’s sound barrier product, Acoustifence, has now helped Santa Monica resi- dents cope with construction noise at two large sites. Since 2011, an Acoustifence con- struction fence has been successfully utilized at the $55 million Santa Mon- ica High School Science and Tech- nology Building project. In addition, Acoustifence is also being utilized in the construction of the Expo Phase 2 Operations and Maintenance Fa- cility complex, part of the $1.5 billion 6.6 mile extension of the Expo Light Rail Line from the existing terminus at Culver City. The site is lo- cated at Stewart Street and Exposi- tion Boulevard in the City of Santa Monica. Santa Monica is a densely popu- lated area where multi-family and sin- gle-family homes are located adjacent to the property. The neighbors, which include the residential plus some sen- sitive commercial tenants, face the two short sides and one long side of the rectangular piece of property. The O&M facility contractor in- stalled a standard 8-foot high chain link construction fence on the project’s three sides where neighbors reside. The company then wrapped 1,000 lineal feet of Acoustifence sound bar- rier onto the chain link fence. Acous- tifence is a modern day acoustical soundproofing product developed by Tampa, Fla.-based Acoustiblok, Inc. It is being recognized more and more as a way to mitigate construction noise at large-scale construction projects. “Acoustifence is a unique 1/8th inch, 6 x 30(3mm x 1.83m x 9.14m) heavy mineral filled, barium free vis- coelastic acoustical material. It’s an advanced material sound barrier that is placed between a noise source and the noise receiver,” noted Marilyn Myers, Acoustiblok’s chief operating officer, who worked with the consul- tant on the sale of the Acoustifence material. The material easily attach- es to chain link fences and comes in large sections and in custom made sizes, making it well suited for con- struction fence applications that re- quire a soundproofing element at the construction site. Acoustifence is extremely strong and was engineered to withstand harsh outdoor environments like con- struction sites and highway environ- ments. Full exposure to dirt, grease, oil, mold or even being driven over is not a problem for the Acoustifence. “The contrac- tor needed the ma- terial fast and we were able to get it to them immedi- ately. They were able to install it quickly and were pleased with the re- sults,” Myers said. The contractor wrapped as much Acoustifence as they could on the chain link fence. This creates an ef- fective noise barri- er and helps keep the construction noise levels down as best as possible, given that the area is not completely enclosed. In addition to being a sound bar- rier, Acoustifence’s opacity and black color also provides a visual separa- tion for the construction project and the neighbors. It also helps reduce the amount of dust that would otherwise blow through a chain link construc- tion fence. “When performing a large-scale construction project in certain areas of the United States, there are local noise and vibration ordinances that re- quire adherence. While construction contractors are not required to put up an acoustical construction fence un- less they exceed the allowable limits, often times they make the decision to install one before work commenc- es to keep noise at a minimum to the surrounding residential and business neighbors. They want them to have the best experience possible during Acoustifence in place at the Expo Phase 2 Metro Rail Line construction project. Acoustifence quiets construction site clamorAcoustifence is gaining recogni-

tion as an effective sound barrier for mitigating construction noise in com-munities where large construction projects are taking place.

Recently, two large scale con-struction projects in the Los Angeles/Santa Monica areas used Acoustifence to minimize construction noise.

With much new development go-ing on in these regions, often neigh-bors may feel like they are being en-croached upon by the effects of new construction activity and construc-tion related noise. Santa Monica is a densely popu-lated area where multi-family and sin-gle-family homes are located adjacent to the property. The neighbors, which include the residential plus some sen-sitive commercial tenants, face the two short sides and one long side of the rectangular piece of property.
