The term Democracy is made of two Greek

words “Demos” and “Kratein”

which means Public and Government.

According to Prof. Cile, “Democracy is that

structure in which every individual has a role

in the government’’.

According to Abraham Lincoln:

Democracy is the government of

the people, by the people and for the

people.

In democracy there are freedom

and discipline go together.

According to Bode,

‘Democracy is a way of life’.

Democracy as a way of life

provides opportunity to

people to develop their

personality .

Fundamentals

of

Democracy

Respect for the personality of

the individual:

In a democratic set up, the

individual personality is given more

respect than any other material

object. It means that every

opportunity is given to the individual

to develop himself and to enjoy

freedom.

Justice and opportunity for development:

The democracy provides opportunity to every

individual to develop himself (or) herself. This is

called equality of opportunity. It also requires that

certain other conditions such as freedom, Social

Justice and equality before law should be

guaranteed. .

Consciousness about duties and obligations:-

In a democratic society, simply demand for rights is

not correct. Democracy requires duties and rights.

There do not exist rights without duties.

Freedom of thought, speech

and conscience:

Democracy is based on the

concept of granting freedom to the

citizens of thought, speech,

conscience and faith. They are free

to think in their own way and

express their views boldly but this

freedom does not allow them the

liberty to disturb freedom of others.

There is no question of forcing

one’s views upon other.

Democracy and Education

(or) Education for

democracy:

Education and

democracy are very intimately

related one of the fundamental

of democracy is that citizens

shall be properly educated.

Objectives of

Democratic

Education

• To develop individuals as useful members of the

society.

• To train and educate the members of the younger

generations for the requirement of democracy and

inculcate in them the sense of discipline, good

character, proper behavior etc.,

•To train the educants in the art of

proper utilization

of leisure.

• To provide proper training in

leadership. So that the members

of the younger generation may

play their role effectively in a

democratic society.

In short education for democracy

should aim at all round

development of the personality of

the student and mould them as

useful members of the society.

Curriculum

of the education

for democracy

In a democratic society

curriculum of the education

should be so planned. Then

only the ideals and objectives

of the democracy should be

achieved.

Curriculum of democratic

education should possess the

following characteristics.

Flexibility:-

A democratic society is

ever changing affair. In

democratic society

achievement of ideals and

objectives of the democracy

constant changing.

Development of desirable social

attitude:

The democracy gives a lot of

importance to the society. The

members of the younger

generations should be made to

develop certain desirable social

attitudes. Basically the education

for democracy must try to remove

all kinds of prejudices from theminds of educants.

Job oriented and vocation

based for

democratic set up:

For a democratic set up, It is

the most important need that

educant should be trained and

educated in a democratic

efficiency. Unless they are able

to earn their livelihood, the

whole texture of democracy

shall topple down.

Method of teaching :-

The Method should be dynamic and

flexible , Scientific and progressive. co-

operation, fellow feelings respect for

others and consciousness towards the

requirements of the society may be

developed these qualities among the

students through the method of teaching.

School for democratic education:

School should inculcate desirable social

attitude and love for democratic ideals and

democratic values among the students.

The whole democracy and functioning of

the school should be based on democratic

values and democratic traditions. So school

should inculcate democratic values and

democratic traditions among the students.

Discipline

Democracy can’t function

properly unless People Are very well

disciplined. In a democratic society

self– discipline is of great

importance.

This is what is expected in the

educational system for democracy. In

such a system student should be

encouraged to have self disciplined.

The best method of teaching

discipline in the students is

to train them through

responsibilities.

ROLE of the Teacher in democratic

education

Teacher should have good character.

The teacher should able to understand

the potentialities of the child.

Teacher should have the

responsibility; to bring about desirable

changes in the attitude of the students.
