Jeffrey A. Forrest
How to Succeed at Public Speaking
A seasoned public speaker, Jeffrey A. Forrest highlights some inspiring speeches that can help us all overcome America’s number one fear.
I’m going to say something you’ve probably heard a million times before…
But I’ll say it again, for good measure
Practice makes perfect.
While you’re probably rolling your eyes right now, here’s the thing: it’s true. Especially in the public speaking realm. Very rarely will you find individuals who think winging it yields better results than those who spend time preparing.
So Practice! But how?❖ Practice doesn’t only come in
the form of reciting words off a dozen or so index cards while standing in front of a mirror !
❖ There are a myriad of ways to practice your public speaking skills!
❖ More importantly, there are a vast trove of resources to help you perfect your public speaking skills
One of my favorite resources?
TED Talks Since 1984, TED (which is an acronym for Technology, Entertainment, Design) has operated as a set of worldwide conferences run by the private non-profit Sapling Foundation.
Ideas Worth Spreading
❖ Addressing a myriad of topics, speakers are given a maximum of 18 minutes to present their message!
❖ Their TED Talks are streamed live across the internet, as well as available online for free viewing!
❖ With topics ranging from the scientifically-focused to the fashion-minded, captivating speakers delivering facts, figures, and stories, TED Talks are the perfect resource to help perfect your public speaking skills!
So, without further adieu…
Here are a few great public speaking tips
Gathered from some fascinating TED Talks!
Got a meeting? Talk a walkNilofer Merchant
Keep Your Cortisol Low❖ In her TED Talk, Nilofer Merchant
explains the importance of keeping your cortisol low !
❖ Cortisol is a steroid hormone that is secreted by your adrenal glands during times of stress and anxiety, and has the ability to limit your creativity and ability to understand complex information!
❖ The best way to lower cortisol levels? Exercise! !
❖ So hit the gym, take a quick yoga class, or go out for a run before a speaking event. And if you’re really short time, a brisk 10-minute walk really makes all the difference
The puzzle of motivation

Create a Routine❖ No matter how you want to look at it, we
are all, in some way, creatures of habit !❖ When it comes to public speaking,
establishing a methodical routine can help alleviate stress and center you emotionally before getting up on the podium!
❖ Explore the space you’re speaking in beforehand, give yourself a chance to have a dry run, and establish your sight lines!❖ These are just a few beneficial tasks
you can to before each presentation. You’ll find comfort in establishing a familiar routine, and with comfort usually comes confidence.

“Ninety percent of how well the talk will go is determined before the speaker steps on the
platform.”
