A plume of smoke rises as Iraqi elite counterterrorism forces fight Islamic State militants to regain control of the Quds neighborhood of Mosul, Iraq, on Friday, Dec. 30, 2016. Iraqi government forces launched a large-scale offensive in mid-October to retake Mosul, the last major urban center held by the extremist group in Iraq. The offensive, however, had stalled about two months later because of the presence inside Mosul of some one million civilians, stiff IS resistance and the lack of urban warfare experience among some Iraqi units. AGATHA CHRISTIE HAD LITTLE-KNOWN ROLE IN ANCIENT NIMRUDJANUARY 03, 2017This 1949 photo taken by British mystery author Agatha Christie shows a statue of a lamassu, a winged bull from Assyrian mythology who guarded the royal court from evil, at the ancient site of Nimrud, near modern day Mosul, Iraq. Christie had a little-known link to Nimrud: She accompanied her husband, archaeologist Max Mallowan, as he excavated the onetime capital of the Assyrian Empire, and she assisted by piecing together some artifacts and chronicling the dig in photos and film. To her it was just as important as writing, says her grandson, Mathew Prichard. (Agatha Christie via AP)2/12/2017 4:38 PMPictures of the day - JAN.1 -JAN.6 - vinhbinh2010121GALLERY PHOTOS

The lamassus at the palace gates were among the works destroyed by IS militants in 2015. Christies grandson, Matthew Prichard, says she would be heartbroken by the destruction, saying if she and her husband Max Malloran, were alive to see it, they would not have recognized the places where they had been and lived and worked. In her 60s at the time, Christie travelled to the site repeatedly to help her archaeologist husband. She reassembled destroyed ivories, laying out hundreds of pieces on a table to pick through them. Agatha was a passionate solver of jigsaw puzzles, says British archaeologist Georgina Herrman.
