• Last October, Holcim PH and PPI culminated its successful partnership for the JASCOR during the awarding ceremony at the InterCon Manila. Mozart Pastrano (Philippine Daily Inquirer) and Malou Guieb (BusinessMirror) were co-winners for the Sustainable Construction Story of the Year- National Newspaper Category, while Yas Ocampo (Mindanao Times) took home the top prize for the Community Newspaper Category

• With PPI’s assistance, the competition was expanded to its 90 member newspapers from the 16 in the initial run and involved 1,600 of articles on the construction industry from just 82

This year, the JASCOR focused on the construction industry’s role in sustainable development and inclusive growth• Seminars were held in Luzon, Visayas,

and Mindanao to highlight regional issues affected by the construction industry

• Economist Adoracion Navarro of the Philippine Institute for Development Studies provided an overview of the construction industry’s role in development, while local resource persons also shared insights

• PPI Training Director Tess Bacalla talked about the need to look at underreported or unreported issues using the lens of sustainability for more relevant and informative stories for the public

For the Luzon leg, the focus was on the government’s relocation policies for the urban poor

• Participants went to Bulacan, one of the primary relocation areas for informal settlers in Metro Manila, and learned about the areas for improvement in the government’s current practices

In Visayas, the discussion centered on the challenges of rebuilding after the disasters

• Participants checked out the progress of the Bohol reconstruction after the 2013 earthquake and discussed how the gaps in its implementation

The Mindanao seminar covered the need for additional support for indigenous peoples

• The Mindanao leg was done in Bukidnon where participants saw how one Manobo community continues to fight to find ways to preserve its heritage despite a lack of government support for proper facilities

We are launching this month the first collection of the winning articles of the 2014-2015 JASCOR

• This contains the 10 stories that made it as finalists in the 2014-2015 cycle

• We hope that this can be a useful reference for the media and the public on how the construction industry can better contribute to development
