What is a media distributor?Media Distributors are companies that publish different works including: Magazines, Print, Art, Television, Radio etc. to retail outlets. Each retail has different times of brands that they publish. Some publish just radio whereas some publish magazines to television. Each media distributor have various portfolios and for a magazine or any form of print to reach a local supermarket it has to go through a distributor. The distributor is the one that make the magazines and sell them to shops for profit. Most distributors don’t just rely on one brand or genre to sell their products. The same distribution that may sell rock magazines may also sell lifestyle magazines. These companies are very popular and provide different forms of media online and offline to millions of people. For my music magazine there are various distributors that could publish my rock magazine as many well known companies sell magazines like mine, however some have more of an advantage than others. Having a more popular media distributor sell my product to retail businesses would be more beneficial as it means it will be more widely known to the public and if they already sell music magazines that could help my magazine to sell.

Examples of media distributors? Here are some examples of media distributors which use different media platforms of many kinds, some are more popular than others and all sell a variety of products.

Bauer media:A media distributor that focuses on all different types of genres and different media platforms, they display a various amount of content you see in the local supermarket and all have different genres and are popular amongst the public. The have a wide collection of brands and are well know so are more popular.

Immediate Media CoA media distributor that has various brands that focus on magazines for different ages, genders, and interests. Their magazines are very popular and are specified at people with different interests for example: travel, science, cycling, history etc.

Bauer publishes Q, Mojo & Kerrang music magazines, they distribute a range of different music magazines which gives them a lot of range and variety in what they distribute. These three magazine

are aimed at similar yet slightly different audiences. For example: Kerrang seems to be more suited for teenagers whereas Mojo and Q are for a more mature adult audience. Mojo and Q are monthly music magazines whereas Kerrang is only

published weekly, this shows that there is a market for my music magazine at Bauer as they do not sell a monthly rock music magazine. This is interesting as it shows that there is limited market for people who enjoy rock music, as although Kerrang is a good magazine it is

only published weekly so it isn’t produced as professionally and of a good quality like Mojo and Q. The advantages of the fact they already have a rock music magazine shows that there is already a market for this type of music magazine meaning it could be distributed, it allows

Bauer to expand their company to a wider yet more selective audience. By doing so it means the perhaps their audience will buy Kerrang and my magazine, this means more business for the company as there is a market for rock music as Q and Mojo both mention

some rock bands and so is a popular genre of music magazine to create. Kerrang is popular amongst lot’s of young people so having a monthly rock music magazine for them would create

more business for a younger audience who are likely to be in shops regularly wanting a music magazine unlike slightly older people. However the fact that Bauer already has a market for Rock Music is disadvantage as they not want another music Magazine related to the rock

genre. By doing so it means that most rock music news, features Are already published by Kerrang. Furthermore, the use of the same target audience means That they may not want

another magazine with the same audience as they possibly want to Target older or younger people instead. My magazine is very similar to Kerrang so they may be disinterested in the

music magazine as it specifies in all types of rock music and Bauer might want to only target certain people for a different genre. However, I feel that there is a bigger market for Rock’d out

in Bauer as unlike mojo and Q it is specified at a particular audience which will probably do well, also this specified audience could allow for Bauer to expand and create Rock’d Out TV & Radio

like Kerrang. Their isn’t much distribution and market for music channels with different music from all different ages like Mojo and Q this would make it more popular, and influential as more younger people will be interested in it.

Bauer Media group is Europe’s largest privately owned publishing Group. It is a worldwide media empire offering over 300 magazines in 15 countries, as well as online, TV and radio stations. Their business is

full of different media brands including the two popular music magazines Kerrang and Q magazine. Bauer is has a major advantage against other competitors as they have a vast amount of influential

brands which people trust as one of Bauer's main objectives is for the influential media brands to engage with it’s readers on a personal level.

About

Time Inc. UK (formally know as IPC Media) is a very popular distributor which reaches 28 million adults every month. Time Inc. UK has various famous

brands reaching out to all different types of audiences (mainly focused around adults) Including various magazines with different genres including, Now,

Country Life, Rugby World etc. The brands that it distributes are all different form one another, reaching out to all different types of audiences for them to

enjoy.

Time Inc. produces two music magazines: Uncut and NME. These brands are well known are popular with a more adult audience. They provide various types of music,

NME focusing primarily on rock, alternative and indie music. Whereas Uncut focusing mainly on the Britpop genre. These Magazines are more popular with an older audience unlike my magazine which

the audience is targeted towards teenagers. Time Inc. UK doesn’t really have many music focused magazines and the ones that they do publish don’t focus on only rock music only a section of it. An

advantage of not having a rock music only magazine means that there is an audience for it that Time Inc. UK isn’t using meaning there is a market for Rock’d Out. Furthermore, most of their magazines and

brands seem to be primarily focused on adults and don’t target younger audiences like teenagers. I feel this is an advantage for my magazine as it means their will be a market for my magazine meaning

it will get very popular people will want to read it. However, as Time Inc. Uk specifies mainly at adults my magazine would be placed out and wouldn’t really fit as Time Inc. UK may not want magazines

that suit for a younger audience. As there is already a magazine that includes Rock Time Inc. UK could be less likely to accept my magazine as it focuses on something that they already Publish. In ways it would be beneficial for the distributor to use my magazine as it will attract a younger audience. And

possibly bring in some young adults who are interested in the modern rock music, by doing this I could help Bring in a whole new audience for the company. I feel that Time Inc. Uk would produce my

magazine as its something they haven’t really created and as rock music magazines are quite popular it could be a well known Brand quickly. By doing so this will bring them in business and make younger

people reader some of their Other magazines. In ways Time Inc. Uk may not want the magazine as it mainly targets an age which somewhat Doesn’t look as professional, however this could help the create a

whole new range of products.

About

Immediate Media Co. is one of the biggest media consumers in the UK and the fourth largest magazine publisher. Their brands vary from things matching

different ages, interests etc. There magazines include paper craft, radio times, top gear etc. These are very popular amongst different audiences and is why they’re so popular reaching 33 million

people per month. They have various magazines for all ages from young to old and are open to all different forms of creativity and engaging people with what they love.

Immediate Media co. although a big company is very limited in their music magazines. There only music magazines are BBC Music and Radio Times (which focuses on

television, music and radio). BBC Music although a popular magazine is more situated at older people and an audience who enjoy classical music. The fact that they have

music magazines but not for their age grouping of16-24 is interesting and is an advantage for me. There is no rock music based magazines that they have so by doing

this they will attract a younger audience and as it is the only music magazine for younger people it is more likely to be a popular brand. Furthermore, this will allow the distributor have a new base for their audience

as they can start appealing more to teenagers as at the minute their younger audience is limited which is a disadvantage for the company as the younger the audience the more likely they are to buy a magazine. However as there is not really any other music magazines being distributed this could Mean Immediate

Media doesn’t want more about music magazines and would rather focus their magazines more Towards older and really young people. Also as they don’t have any magazines like mine this could mean they’re

Not keen on the idea and furthermore it may not do as well with business. However the distributors are lacking In a huge part of their audience and this means it is reaching less people than it could do, bringing

in a younger audience could also attract them to read their other magazines. As Immediate Medias portfolio is full of interesting brands which may not be popular to most they could use this as an advantage

for rock music fans. Also, it allows their audience to buy more than just two music magazines – one with only a specified genre that not everybody enjoys and radio times which does specifies what is new at the minute, this is a disadvantage as some people may not be interested in that, by distributing my magazine

they could create more business and begin to introduce a new target audience. I feel Rock’d Out could make a huge impact on their business so that their audience 15-24 has more to read than the history

magazine that they have available.

About

Future Plc. Is a very well known media distributor and publishes many magazines including video games, films, photography, music, sport etc. It has a variety of products for people to engaged with and in 2006

was the sixth largest media corporation in the United kingdom. It includes many brands especially for the three major game consoles as it is the official company that produces the brands such as ‘Xbox

magazine.’ It’s brands are more situated at a younger audience rather than older meaning they’re more informative and technological based unlike some other distributors as a younger audience is their main

focus.

Future Plc. Already has tow music magazines with a similar genre to mine including: Classic Rock & Metal Hammer. There is an instant advantage as they’re already familiar to this genre so they have the audience

for it. These magazines are both popular meaning there is a good base for my magazine to be distributed. These magazines however differ from my magazine as Classic Rock mainly

focuses on older and hence ‘classical’ rock for old rock fans (mainly for an older audience) and Metal Hammer focuses mainly on more hardcode rock music. Whereas my music magazine

combines all times of rock from heavy to soft music, this means there is more in my magazine and somewhat combines these two. This is an advantage as it means these magazines are

similar but not like mine meaning the audience will be more interested in it. However as these Magazines both fall under the genre of rock this could be a disadvantage as three rock music magazines fro one company could mean there isn’t a variety in their portfolio and reaches a limited audience. Future Plc. May I also only want to have possible a pop or another genre of

music instead as they already have rock music magazines meaning everything is mostly covered. Also, Future Plc. May want to appeal to an older audience, however if Rock’ d Out was

distributed with Future Plc. They would appeal to a younger audience as they’re less likely to read a classic rock magazine and others may not listen to hard-core rock so it means my

magazine can appeal to those people making the brand more popular. By doing this it will appealTo a more wide range of audience as a younger audience know more about technology so they

can use other technologies that Future Plc. publishes. I feel that using my magazine would be an advantage as it places lot’s of different aspects into one magazine and means that somebody

who likes both hard-core and contemporary and different types of rock can buy my magazine and Metal Hammer and means that future Plc get more business.

Page 7: Which media distributor would be most suited for my magazine?

After looking at various magazine distributors and the different brands and popularity they produce I feel that Bauer would distribute my media product. This is as not only odes it have a wide range of brands, it is one with similar magazines to mine. This could be seen as a disadvantage however it means that they’re familiar with rock music magazines as they produce Kerrang and having a monthly one could make the audience by my magazine and Kerrang. By doing this they will have more audience related to rock music and they will also have a professional and well produced one as it will be monthly and although Mojo and Q are monthly they’re not specified specially at all forms of rock like my music magazine. I have thought about Future Plc. As a second option for my magazine to be distrusted at, however as they already produce two heavy and quite hard-core rock music magazines, there seems no place for my magazine. Future Plc. Likes to focus on rock music for older fans whereas mine has a bunch of more contemporary musicians I feel that there would not be much of a market. This is the same for Time Inc. UK. This would be good distributor also but I feel that their brand NME really focuses on the rock music available and although my brand would help it, I feel that my magazine wouldn’t suit there. Immediate Media Co. is very much more for adults or young children so I feel trying to be distributed in that company would not be the right idea as it may not be popular amongst their audiences. Bauer is my first choice as it produces modern music magazines and I feel that this is an advantage and that the product would do well.
