ATVs - Permits for ATVs traversing along 4WDbeaches are available only to Currituck Countyproperty owners. These permits can be acquiredfrom the Currituck County satellite governmentoffice in Corolla, located at 1123 Ocean Trail.

Alcohol - As per North Carolina state law, alcohol inopen containers is illegal in a vehicle’s passengerareas however, alcohol is permitted on the beachesat Carova.

Beach Weddings - Because of the picturesque beauty ofthe place, Carova is a popular beach wedding destination.Check with your local vacation rental company for therules and regulations of a specific property regardingholding beach weddings and parties.

Beach-Goer Regulations - Set chairs, umbrellas, volleyballnets, and other beach equipment well below the sandytracks and just above the low tide line. 50ft off theduneline & 50 ft off the shoreline is reserved for vehicletraffic. The sandy tracks are part of the NC State Road andbeachgoers are strictly forbidden from setting their beachequipment in that area.

Camping - While there are a number ofcampgrounds in mainland Currituck County (onthe western side of the Currituck Sound), campingis strictly not allowed on any spot along the 11-mile stretch of the Carova shoreline.

Fires - Bonfires are strictly prohibited along the4WD area beaches or the Carova dune line.However, grills or any other type of “contained”fire is allowed.

Fishing - An activity enjoyed by locals living inOBX NC homes for sale, fishing is allowed allthroughout the ocean-facing beaches on theCurrituck Outer Banks as well as in the CurrituckSound. However, fishing in the Currituck Soundrequires you to obtain a freshwater license.Meanwhile, for anglers over the age of 16, asaltwater fishing license is required. Check with alocal tackle shop in Corolla for more details onhow to get the right license.

Fireworks - Exploding fireworks, spinning fireworks,and self-propelled fireworks are illegal in NorthCarolina. This law is strictly enforced because of the drybeach grass in the area as well as the wild horsepopulation which can easily be spooked.

Glass Bottles - These are allowed on the Carovashoreline but much like all properties, visitors arerequested to dispose all of their trash properly. Thereare no public trash cans along the 4-wheel drivebeaches, so be prepared to bring your trash back withyou.

Lifeguards - There are no beaches with lifeguard stationsin Carova but there are beaches in neighboring Corollawith lifeguard stations. Currituck County does have “oceanrescue” patrolling the beaches on ATVs during the summermonths.

Surfing - Because there aren’t any lifeguard stations andthe red flags that signal dangerous surf conditions arespaced about a ½ mile apart, surfers are asked to becareful when choosing to ride a wave. Surfing is allowed inany area and surfers can freely navigate the 11-milestretch of beach to find the best break.

Wild Horses - Most of the best real estate agents on theOuter Banks NC consider the famed Corolla WildHorses as one of the best parts of living in Carova.These horses freely roam the sandy dunes and bothvisitors and locals are advised to follow certain rulesand guidelines: (1) Do not feed or leave food out forthe wild horses, (2) Respect the 50 feet boundary setby Currituck County for anyone who wants to admireand take photos of the wild horses, and (3) If aviolation of these is spotted, immediately contact theCurrituck Sheriff's Office at (252) 453-8204.
