– Thieves typically strike while people are at work. Most thefts and burglaries are reported once people go home at NOON around lunchtime or after work around 5PM.

– Vandalism is typically reported in the morning around 9-10AM when it’s easier for people to see criminals in the act.

– Violent crimes such as assault and robberies typically happen at night around 9-10PM while people are out on the town or on their way home from an event.

Vision

Crime and safety are important factors when deciding on where to live. Trulia aims to aggregate the data and help home buyers and homeowners make better decisions.

Data SourcesThe crime data is provided by three partners, CrimeReports.com, EveryBlock.com and SpotCrime.com. These partners work with police agencies, crime feeds and news outlets for data. Unfortunately, not all police agencies publish data and we are limited by the partners we work with.

MapsThe heatmaps are created by analyzing the density of 12 months of crime data across census blocks. The color scale is relative, with an even percentage distribution across all cities. This means that the top 5% of blocks with the most crime density are colored dark red across every city, the next 5%-10% of blocks are light red while the next 10%-20% of blocks are orange, etc.

The incident-level data (black dots) represents up to 2,500 of the most recently reported crime data. Updates to this crime data varies based on agency and location, from hourly to monthly, resulting in different cities having different timeframes for data.

Known Issues1. Certain areas that have crime are displayed as green

A metropolitan area is comprised of multiple police agencies; however, not all agencies report data with the same methodology or format. This may cause select areas in a city to be presented as green where otherwise with perfect information, they would not be.  We are working to improve accuracy. 

2. The data is not real-timeOur next version will solve this for all the agencies that provide data in near real-time. Agencies that report data weekly or monthly will still have time lag. 

3. We do not have every cityWe are continuously working to improve coverage. We’ll be launching another version that will significantly increase the number of cities.

We encourage everyone to comment on the crime maps to correct data, add insights and thoughts, and give advice to future home buyers and homeowners. Data is only one input. Your comments and thoughts about crime will be very helpful to users.
