Legend says that that the name of this village comes from the daughter of a wealthy lord that kept her trapped in one of the castle’s towers.
Juromenha is a Portuguese typical village located between Alandroal and Elvas which strategic location motivated the construction of the Fortress
as an important guarding place in the Guadiana River, during the Roman times.

Juromenha & The Alqueva The Alqueva dam, that generates the single biggest artificial lake in Western Europe, is located in Guadiana River, in the inner Alentejo. This Bayou extends for over 80 km of river. This well known water dam was built not only to support all watering of plantation of Alentejo, having its own hydro-electric plant, but also assumes an important role in the area’s tourism. Access: Lisbon (exit in Borba) – 200kms • Through A2, Bridge 25 de Abril towards South • In Marateca, take the exit 6 to get in A6, towards Spain • Exit 7 to Borba/Alandroal, get in N255 towards Alandroal • From Alandroal go through N373 until exit to Juromenha Alternative: Exit 8 of A6 in Elvas (West) – 230kms • Follow the indications to N4/Elvas • Go forward in the roundabouts • Turn right towards N373 following Juromenha (16kms) • Exit to Juromenha Spain (Badajoz) – 35kms • A5 (Spanish high way)Spain -Portugal • Pass the Portuguese border indications at A6 (in Caia) • Exit 11 towards Elvas • Get in the N4 and go by 2 roundabouts • In the second roundabout, take the third exits in to the N373 • Exit to Juromenha
