On a large scale, the new homeowners willunderstand if you need a bit more time andhave a legitimate reason such as conflictingwork schedules, unexpected circumstances,etc. As long as you discuss these issuesbefore the close, there is a very minimalchance of confusion or any potentialconflicts during this process.

In addition, if you and the buyers agreed totransfer any services such as alarmmonitoring or pest control, it is essentialthat you sent this up before leaving thehome for good. After this part of the processis complete, ask your agent to get in touchwith theirs to confirm that transfer wentaccordingly to plan.

Even if this may be self-explanatory forsome, it is a common courtesy to makesure your old home is clean and ready togo for the new buyers.

“Some folks leave all kinds of unwantedclothes, furniture, paint cans, and otheritems, thinking they are helping the buyers,”Jarvis says. If the new buyers didn’t explicitlyask for the paint cans or sofas, there is agood chance that they did not.

It is common to leave or forget somethingbehind, so be sure to double-check areassuch as the garage or the attic to make sureitems are not overlooked during thisprocess. At the same time, you don’tnecessarily have to have the home deepcleaned or anything of that nature.

Before you close the door for the last time,

run through a short checklist such as goingthrough the house one last time, makingsure your mail has been forwarded to yournew address, etc. We all get in a bit of a rusheven in the best planned moves, so be sureto take a deep breath and look forward tothe next stage of your life.
