● Monday May 12, 2:28 pm: An earthquake of the magnitude 8.0 on the Richter scale hit Sichuan completely unprepared. The body count is still rising – the last official figures state over 50,000 people killed, more than 280,000 injured and still about 30,000 missing. About 15 million people live in the earthquake area of 65,000 square kilometers, 3669 villages are affected. The disaster creates lots of empathy within China and abroad; volunteers from all over the country come to the earthquake areas to support the domestic and foreign rescue teams. Domestic and international donations reached USD 3 billion so far – the Central Government announced to allocate additional USD 10 billion to the country’s reconstruction fund.

● Exactly one week after the earthquake struck Sichuan, people all over China honored the victims with three minutes of silence on Monday afternoon, May 19. While pedestrians and workers stopped for a moment of silence, only the sound of ambulance sirens and car horns could be heard for miles in any direction. This was followed by a mourning period of three days during which flags were lowered to half-mast, cinemas and bars all over China were closed. Also, the torch relay of the Olympic fire was discontinued during those days.

● Since all buildings that were built after 80s' in Chengdu city are able to withstand an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0, there are no serious damages of buildings caused by the earthquake here. Furthermore the Prediction Office of the Sichuan Seismological Bureau states, “Chengdu does not lie in the aftershock danger zone, any aftershock that reaches Chengdu will be much weaker than the original quake.”

● The European Chamber of Commerce in Chengdu celebrated the “Europe Day” on Friday, May 9, with a Gala Dinner & Ball in Kempinski Hotel. Around 150 attendees from Chengdu, Chongqing and Shanghai joined the event. German artist Martin Breuer exhibited his paintings during this event. Maxxelli Real Estate Chengdu was one of the sponsors of the “Europe Day”.
