The origin of this British cat can probably be traced to the Egyptian house cats. It is assumed that these cats were brought into Britain in ancient history. It is also the most popular pedigree currently.

British shorthair origins can be traced as far back to the first century A.D. This makes it one of the oldest breeds in the world.

When the Romans invaded Britain, they had brought the Egyptian cats with them.

These cats eventually bred with the native European cats. The resultant breed gradually grew to adapt itself to the cold and developed a thick coat on its body.

They also grew to be healthy, robust and large. It is broadly understood that breeding of these cats began in the nineteenth century.

The breeders were trying to reproduce the blue-grey color known as “British blue”.

The British shorthair is a powerful but small and compact in size. It gives the impression of having short legs, a large chest, round paws, balanced and sturdy.

The head is massive with roundness to it as seen in the male cats. They also have above average large eyes, which are roundish with a copper color tinge.

This eye color is mostly seen in the British blue variant. The eye colors may be different if the cat has a different colored coat.

Another key differentiator about these cats is that they mature slowly as compared to other domestic cats.

They complete their physical development at about three years of age. The males are unusually heavy weighing between four to eight kg while the females weigh around three to six kg.

This breed is not a playful kind. However, they are very devoted to their owners. They also seem to be dignified and easygoing.
