PHYSICAL SCIENCE
ENERGY
Energy is the capacity to do work.
Unit of energy is Joule
FORMS OF ENERGY•Potential energy•Kinetic energy
•Mechanical energy
Kinetic energy
Energy possessed by an object due to its motion is defined as kinetic energy.
KINETIC ENERGY
Kinetic energy, k=1/2mv2
M=mass and v is the velocity of object
POTENTIAL ENERGY
Potential energy is the energy possessed by an object by virtue of their position.
POTENTIAL ENERGY
U=Mgh,where m is the mass of the
body,g is acceleration due to gravity and h is the height of body from earth.
MECHANICAL ENERGY
Mechanical energy can be defined as the sum of kinetic and potential energies of an object.
Mechanical energy
E=U+K where u is the potential energy and k is the kinetic energy
EXAMPLES
KINETIC ENERGY Energy possesed by a
moving ball Energy possessed by falling
water Energy possessed by a
falling stone
POTENTIAL ENERGY
Energy possessed by water in dam
Energy possesed by a stone lying on ground
Energy possessed by a book lying in table
