Presentation of the project « Institut Innovant de Formation par la Recherche »

(IIFR) Open research training to as many: creating training for innovative research and education and support them to facilitate the emergence of open innovation ecosystems. Competitiveness between world's most attractive universities is due in large part to their ability to develop a culture of innovation at all levels and to provide research training to students since the undergraduate level. Learning by research provides a more complete experience, where not only the traditional scientific knowledge that Francois Jacob describes as “Day Science”, but also stimulation, emotion, involvement, that only exploration the unknown gives when dealing with “Night Science”. Unfortunately, far too few people may have lived this research being done, as it is traditionally done in well equipped laboratories with experienced research teams. These labs can accommodate students and trainees, but their capacity cannot meet a growing need for research training. Various initiatives have shown that it is now possible to promote alternative approaches to research through scientific experiments, low-cost research approaches of “crowdsourcing”, open innovations, “citizen science” or via “scientific discoveries games”. As shown in the results published in Nature, a game like Fold-it has allowed tens of thousands of players to help to solve scientific challenges. These changes in practice can make the "Night Science" accessible to all. This may apply equally to university students, school children or general public without any training environment. Practices that pass through the web, particularly via a mobile phone, can enable all, especially the younger ones, learn while contributing to the progress of scientific research. To allow the research training of new generations, we will establish an innovative and interdisciplinary support and courses for teachers and researchers to use and create tools and devices that will implement these changes to large scale.

Presentation of the event “Learning Through Research”

The official launch of the Institute for Innovating Teaching through Research ('IIFR') project will be marked by a workshop, 13-15th of July 2012 in the presence of multiple stakeholders, internationally recognized not only in their respective disciplines (science, social entrepreneurship...) but also for their innovation in education. We particularly welcome Lee Hartwell, winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine and now instigating an innovative teachers' training program in the United States.

This gathering of exceptional individuals has two main objectives. First, it will allow the dissemination of best practices in terms of pedagogy and innovation in education. After an official opening on July 13th, the day of July14th will present examples of the state of the art of these areas.

The second objective is to develop future initiatives to emerge within the IIFR project, co-constructed between the IIFR team and the expert invitees. Thus, July 15th will be devoted to brainstorm in small groups, centered on the main themes of the IIFR project

We expect that this intensive three-days workshop will serve as strong basis for the implementation of best practices and newly-born projects as a robust basis to achieve the main goal of the IIFR project: research-based training for students and teachers who will integrate science, new technologies and new pedagogies.

Bio Aviv Bergman is professor and founding chairman in the Department of Systems and Computational Biology, as well as professor of neuroscience and pathology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is also external professor at Santa Fe Institute. His research agenda addresses quantitative problems in evolutionary and developmental biology by using a combination of computational, mathematical and experimental tools. Starting with biologically relevant models, they comb for data from existing studies, and in close collaboration with experimentalists, they generate new data. In turn, this data allows them to refine the models, thus guiding both experimental and modeling processes. The ability to test models in this way is facilitated by data generated from systematic genomics efforts undertaken in recent years. Central to his approach is an evolutionary perspective in examining the hypotheses arising from the combination of theoretical model and biological data.

Bio Paulo Blikstein is an assistant professor at Stanford University’s School of Education and (by courtesy) Computer Science Department. Blikstein’s research focus on the confluence of expressive technologies for learning and critical pedagogy. He adapts cutting-edge technologies for use in inner-city schools, such as computer modeling, robotics, and rapid prototyping, creating constructionist learning environments in which children learn science and mathematics by building sophisticated projects and devices. His research interests also include the applications of complexity sciences in education and computational literacy, particularly the new knowledge representation infrastructures emerging from the use of computational representations. Blikstein has worked extensively with inner city students in developing countries, such as Brazil, Mexico, Senegal, and Costa Rica, and also in the US. He completed his PhD. at the Center for Connected Learning and Computer-Based Modeling at Northwestern University, and holds a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering and a MEng. in Digital Systems Engineering from the University of São Paulo, Brazil (1998, 2001), as well as a MSc. degree from the MIT Media Lab (2002), where he was also a visiting scholar (2003). Outside of academia, Paulo studied Film and directed scientific documentaries. Paulo has published several book chapters and papers about his work in education.

Bio James lives and works at the crossroads of the co-working and maker movement. After leaving high school at 16, James launched a successful career as an entrepreneur and technologist but never stopped looking over his shoulder at school. He founded The School Factory, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing the business, education, and creative communities together to transform public learning. In 2002, James engaged Milwaukee in creating Bucketworks, a health club for the brain. Bucketworks offers people and communities both a physical space and the tools to test-drive their ideas and their passions. Since Bucketworks opened its members have created more than 70 new programs and companies, ranging from high-tech startups to high schools, hundreds of pieces of art and technology, and thousands of events and experiences. As the economy compressed in 2008 and 2009 and hundreds of similar spaces sprung up across America to support displaced workers and new entrepreneurs, James partnered with these spaces to form the Space Federation, a national network of creative maker environments that share resources, tools, and expertise. To engage the business community in this conversation, James and his team created the Bucket Brigade, a for-profit company that brings the values of open source, open communication, and transparency into the workplace through social technology and social experiences. At the heart of these efforts is James’ fundamental passion and belief that all people are creative; each person has a “genius” which, given a place and the tools, will flourish. Through his work he strives to spark the creative potential in everyone, and change the game of economy, education, and community development.

Bio His interest started in 2008 when he was chair of the University of California systemwide Academic Senate Committee on Research Policy. As chair, he charged the committee with the task of finding ideas to increase synergy across our 10-campus system. He took lead in research seminar network that, as you will see in reading the PLoS paper, that he has hopes to become international. The technical details of the paper are already outdated as he evolves his thinking. But the UC TV Station, UCTV, used his paper as a roadmap to create a new platform UCTV Seminars. Also he helped them develop a virtually zero cost-high quality system for video seminar capture. He is also now getting involved in the MOOC (massive online open access courses) at Stanford and is in direct contact with computer scientist Daphne Koller, one of the founders of Coursera. You may have read where they had 150,000 enroll in the machine language course. He would very much like to get together on science outreach mechanisms. We perhaps can build on the UCTV Seminars model to create an international virtual hub for science outreach.

Bio Ms. Colbert founded the nonprofit organization Escuela Nueva Foundation, which aims to improve the quality of education in low-income schools across the globe. Since its inception, the organization’s innovative educational model has reached more than five million children in Latin America and has influenced education models in Africa and Asia. Founded in 1987, the internationally recognized Escuela Nueva Foundation works to alleviate inequality and poverty through a collaborative learning educational program in Ms. Colbert’s native Colombia. The program provides effective teacher training, improves curriculum and fosters classroom environments that are engaging and compelling to students. The Escuela Nueva model moves away from traditional “teacher-centered” environments, which often emphasize rote memorization directed by the teacher, and instead encourages “child-centered” environments that fully engage students and allow them to learn at their own pace.

Bio Mélanie Dulong de Rosnay is a researcher at the CNRS Institute for Communication Sciences and Creative Commons France legal lead at CERSA CNRS University Paris 2 where she is associated researcher. She co-founded Communia international association on the digital public domain. After receiving a PhD in law, she was a research fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society of Harvard Law School and at the Institute for Information Law of the University of Amsterdam. Her research currently focuses on comparative public policy for open access to scientific data and public domain works, and on transformation of legal regulation introduced by distributed architectures.

Bio Irwan Endrayanto is a staff member of Department Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia. He did his master and his PhD at the Universiteit Twente, the Netherlands. His main research topic is Stochastics Operations Research. Most of his current research is closely connected to the work for his PhD thesis, and therefore concerns the modeling the third generation of wireless network, Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), that employing Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA). His interest includes some general knowledge that are required in the modeling of CDMA system, i.e., stochastics processes, multi-server loss network, queueing theory (e.g., M/G/1 Processor Sharing), mathematical programming, stochastics linear programming, game theory and simulation. Currently, as a minor research interest, in the past 4 years, he does some research in Application of Queueing Theory in Traffic Modeling of Network of Traffic Light.

Bio Dr. Friend is the President of Sage Bionetworks. He is an authority in the field of cancer biology and a leader in efforts to make large scale, data-intensive biology broadly accessible to the entire research community. Dr. Friend has been a senior advisor to the NCI, several biotech companies, a Trustee of the AACR and is a AAAS and Ashoka Fellow as well as an editorial board member of Open Network Biology. Dr. Friend was previously Senior Vice President and Franchise Head for Oncology Research at Merck & Co., Inc. where he led Merck’s Basic Cancer Research efforts. Prior to joining Merck, Dr. Friend was recruited by Dr. Leland Hartwell to join the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center’s Seattle Project, an advanced institute for drug discovery. While there Drs. Friend and Hartwell developed a method for examining large patterns of genes that led them to co-found Rosetta Inpharmatics in 2001. Dr. Friend has also held faculty positions at Harvard Medical School from 1987 to 1995 and at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1990 to 1995. He received his B.A. in philosophy, his Ph.D. in biochemistry and his M.D. from Indiana University.

Bio Francois Grey is passionate about advancing Open Science, specifically Citizen Cyberscience, as the focus for his Shuttleworth Foundation Fellowship. Citizen cyberscience is a collective term for a diverse, grass-roots movement that is enabling ordinary citizens to participate in real scientific research thanks to the Web. Francois is a physicist by training, with a background in nanotechnology and a strong interest in science communication. He spent six years at CERN, managing IT communications. In 2004, he initiated and managed the launch of a volunteer computing project called LHC@home. This led to another project called Africa@home, launched in 2005 in collaboration with several academic institutions, NGOs and United Nations agencies. He is currently based in Beijing, where he has spent the last two years as a visiting professor at Tsinghua University, part of that time supported by the Chinese Academy of Sciences to develop citizen cyberscience in China and more widely in South-East Asia, through an initiative called Asia@home and a project called CAS@home. In 2009, he helped establish a Citizen Cyberscience Centre in Geneva, which is a partnership between CERN, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research and the University of Geneva.

Bio Muki Haklay is a professor of Geographic Information Science in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering at University College in London. He is also the director of the UCL Extreme Citizen Science group, which is dedicate to allow any community, regardless of their literacy, to use scientific methods and tools to collect, analyze, interpret and use information about their area and activities. His research interests include Public access and use of Environmental Information, following work started in his PhD thesis (completed 2002); Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Usability Engineering aspects of GIS; and Societal aspects of GIS use – in particular, participatory mapping and Citizen Science.

Bio Peter Hanappe studied electronic engineering at the University of Ghent, Belgium. He wrote his Ph.D. thesis on real-time music and sound environments at Ircam (Centre George Pompidou, Paris). When a researcher at Sony Computer Science Laboratory in Paris he has worked on new modes of content creation and distribution before focusing on projects in the domain of sustainability. He was involved in setting up a collective system for monitoring noise in urban environments (NoiseTube) and in building critical components for large-scale climate simulations in collaboration with the U.K. Met Office. He has also developed technologies for minimizing energy usage in volunteer computation projects such as ClimatePrediction.net.

Bio Lee Hartwell is the recipient of many national and international scientific awards, including the 1998 Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award, the 1992 Gairdner Foundation International Award and the Alfred P. Sloan Award in cancer research. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 2001 for his discoveries of a specific class of genes that control the cell cycle – research that provided important clues to cancer. He is a professor of genome sciences and an adjunct professor of medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine, and an American Cancer Society Research Professor of Genetics. Hartwell has a B.S. from the California Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and he engaged in postdoctoral work at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. In 1996, he joined the faculty of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and a year later he became its president and director. In addition to founding and co-directing Arizona State University’s new Center for Sustainable Health, Hartwell is the university’s second Virginia G. Piper Chair of Personalized Medicine.

Bio Linda Kamau is a software developer based in Kenya with a degree in Business Information Technology. She develops both web and mobile applications. Before joining Ushahidi, Linda worked as a software developer with IT firms such as Ibidlabs, Ltd. and Mobile Pay, Ltd. When not doing what she loves most (coding), she enjoys outdoor activities like camping. She is also a die hard Man U fan and can often be found watching the latest football match.

Bio As a faculty member in the Department of Biological Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Nathalie Kuldell develops discovery-based curricula drawn from the current literature and ongoing research projects to engage undergraduate students in structured, reasonably authentic laboratory and project-based experiences. This approach to teaching and learning is something she has recently extended to pre-college aged students and their teachers and is a model for education that she believes applies equally well to other fields such as physics, chemistry, math.

Bio Since college days, Yogesh Kulkarani is involved in various educational activities such as literacy movement and educating slum children. After Engineering and management education, he worked for a multinational company for 3 years and then decided to join ‘Vigyan Ashram’ to pursue his passion for education. Vigyan Ashram is a center of ‘Indian Institute Of Education, Pune’. It has developed a unique program - Rural Development through Education System (RDES), which integrates education and rural developmen’. The program is implemented in formal schools as well as in non-formal centers. Since 2003, he is heading this unique initiative, which turned many dropouts’ students into entrepreneurs and inventors. He has conceptualized and headed replication of ‘RDES’ program in 72 schools in 17 districts of Maharashtra and Karnataka states of India involving more than 6000 students. He is actively involved in movement to use of technology in education. He also worked as a project leader to use of ICT for educating nomadic tribes. This project won UNESCO award in the ‘non formal education’ category in 2008. He also worked on the concept of rural internet kiosk and internet based services for villagers. He is founder director of a company M/S Agrocom Pvt Ltd. which provides agricultural solution to the farmers. Vigyan ashram hosts the first Fab lab in collaboration with MIT (USA). He is heading the Fab lab at Pabal since beginning.

Bio Ariel Lindner is an INSERM tenured senior researcher and director of the Interdisciplinary Approaches to Life Sciences master program (AIV) in Paris' Centre for Research and Interdisciplinarity (CRI). He graduated from the Hebrew University (Jerusalem, Israel) "Amirim" interdisciplinary program with major in Chemistry and received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the Weizmann Institute of Science (Rehovot, Israel) in Chemical Immunology for work on catalytic antibodies as enzyme models, antibody conformational changes and directed evolution. After a research period at the Scripps Institute (California, USA), he received EMBO and Marie Curie fellowships to pursue postdoctoral work in Paris with Prof. Miro Radman. His research interests evolve around applying Physical, Chemical and Biological approaches to study variability between clonal individuals, aging and synthetic biology. Together with Francois Taddei, they created the CRI, a convivial meeting point between their lab and interdisciplinary teaching at the undergraduate, master and PhD levels. In this framework he serves as the director of the Interdisciplinary Approaches to Life Sciences master program and leads the Paris team for the synthetic biology iGEM competition at MIT for the past 5 years. Interested in propagating our experience towards a global community of research learning hubs across the world and to experimentation of new pedagogical approaches, he took part in launching the WISER-U community. Activities include empowering local actors in research and education to create their own EduLabs (eg, China, Indonesia).

Bio Vittorio Loreto, PhD (Sapienza University, Rome and ISI, Turin) is Associate Professor at the Physics Dept. of Sapienza University. His scientific activity is mainly focused on the statistical physics of complex systems. In the last few years he has been active in the fields of granular media, complexity and information theory, complex networks theory, communication and language evolution. He has coordinated the European project TAGora, focused to the study of online social communities as well as several Italian national projects and the Rome team of the IST ECAgents project. He published over 100 papers in internationally refereed journals and chaired several workshops and conferences. He was the vice-chairman of STATPHYS 23, the 23rd International Conference on Statistical Physics.

MCCARTNEY Mélissa Company: Science Magazine / AAAS Email: [email protected]

Bio Dr. Melissa McCartney is a member of the editorial staff at Science where she works on several education initiatives, including the Science Prize for Online Resources in Education (SPORE) and the Science Prize for Inquiry-Based Instruction (IBI). She is also the project director for “Science in the Classroom,” an National Science Foundation sponsored project aimed at annotating Science articles so they can be used as teaching and learning materials. Additionally, she is involved in selecting and writing education based Editor’s Choice selections, selecting and editing Research Reports on educational topics, and soliciting and producing Special Issues in Education. Prior to joining Science, Dr. McCartney was a policy fellow at the National Academies where she worked with the Committee on Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine. Dr. McCartney completed her PhD in neuroscience from The George Washington University, where her research consisted of a pharmacological characterization of the GABAA receptor epsilon subunit, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where she examined network dynamics in the hippocampus; specifically with regards to seizure generation in epilepsy.

Bio After a Masters in neuroscience and a training in corrections, Carol Ann O'Hare starts journalism with curiosity and passion. Director of an association of popular science, named Plume!, for two years, she joined the ranks of the association Wikimedia. She is now a “chargée de mission” in "research and teaching." She is responsible for coordinating, supporting, proposing and propeling projects related to the world of research and education.

Bio Manu Prakash is assistant professor, in the department of bioengineering, at Stanford University. After a B.Tech, in Indian Institute of Technology at Kanpur, he graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2008 and became a junior fellow in Physics, from Harvard Society of Fellows. His lab is a curiosity driven research group working in the field of physical biology. Their approach brings together experimental and theoretical techniques from soft-condensed matter physics, fluid dynamics, theory of computation and unconventional nano-fabrication to open problems in biology: from organismal to cellular and molecular scale. They design and build precision instrumentation to probe and perturb biological machines and their synthetic analogues. Along the way, they invent novel technologies with clinical applications with a current focus on resource poor settings.

Bio Henry Roman is a former student of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (MSc Biochemistry) and Rhodes University (PhD Biotechnology), both in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. In 2005 he started a post-doc in the division Biosciences, CSIR, South Africa. He left the CSIR as a projects manager in 2008 to join Metago Engineering Services, an environmental consultancy as a scientist. Henry has an active interest in the bioremediation of acid mine drainage, and the environmental health of South Africa's water resources. He currently works as the director in environmental services and technologies at the Department of Science and Technology in South Africa. Also he is also currently the chairperson of WAYS Africa and president of WAYS. He was part of the organizing committee to launch the Southern African Young Water Professionals (SA YWP) and the Akili Young Scholars (AYS) and is currently the treasurer of SA YWP. The YWP is affiliated to the International Water Association (IWA) and the Water Institute of Southern Africa (WISA). The AYS are affiliated to the Akili Network of the National Research Foundation (NRF).

RUSSO Pedro Institution: International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) Email: [email protected]

Bio Pedro Russo is the global coordinator for the largest network ever in Astronomy, the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009). With 148 countries involved, the IYA2009 fosters a global appreciation of the role and value of science, technology and astronomy as a unifying activity for humanity. Pedro coordinates the planning, implementation, execution and evaluation of the global IYA2009 activities, projects and events. He is also responsible for the communication between the thousands of stakeholders of the project, including projects and national chairs, astronomy community, media and society with respect to all global IYA2009 issues. Pedro obtained his University degree in applied mathematics/physics/astronomy and his Master’s Degree in geophysics from the University of Porto, Portugal. Before assuming his current position, he spent one year and half working with data from the Venus Monitoring Camera onboard ESA’s Venus Express. In the meanwhile he has been working with different international organisations, like Europlanet (European Planetology Network), International Astronomical Union Commission 55: Communicating Astronomy with the Public, European Geophysical Union - Earth and Space Science Informatics Division and International Astronautical Federation -Space and Society Committee. At the European Southern Observatory in Munich Pedro is member of the educational and public outreach department. Pedro is also the editor-in-chief of the scientific journal Communicating Astronomy with the Public Journal.

Bio Pasi Sahlberg is Director General of CIMO (in the Ministry of Education) in Helsinki, Finland. He has experience in classroom teaching, training teachers and leaders, coaching schools to change and advising education policy-makers around the world. Dr. Sahlberg has lived and worked in the United States (World Bank in Washington DC) and Italy (European Commission). He is an international keynote speaker and has published over 100 articles, chapters and books, among them "The Fourth Way of Finland" (2011), “Rethinking accountability in a knowledge society” (2010), “Creativity and innovation through lifelong learning” (2009), and "Education Reform for Raising Economic Competitiveness" (2006). He earned PhD from the University of Jyväskylä (Finland) in 1996. Dr. Sahlberg is a member of the Board of Directors of ASCD and Adjunct Professor at the University of Helsinki and the University of Oulu. His latest book is "Finnish Lessons: What can the world learn from educational change in Finland?".

Bio Michael Springer is an assistant professor of systems biology at Harvard University. His research focuses on understanding the relationship between genotype and phenotype, with a special interest in how biochemistry, molecular design, and wiring can allow cells to process information from their environment and respond appropriately. By comparing similar pathways in related species and duplicated genes in the same species we can study the importance of quantitative features of pathways. Why have 10% of yeast genes been preserved in duplicate? By swapping the promoters and coding regions of a number of duplicate genes and monitoring both transcription and fitness we will determine which quantitative features of duplicate genes are required. Does over-expressing a protein increase the total protein abundance in a cell or decrease the expression of every other protein? How much can a protein level be varied before we observe phenotypic/fitness costs? How similar are environmental responses in related yeast species? How easy is it to evolve quantitative features of signaling pathways? Where does most of the functionally relevant evolution happen: mRNA abundance, protein level, post-translation modification, etc.? To address these and other related questions, we are focusing on cellular homeostasis, beginning with pH homeostasis. We mainly use fluorescence read-outs in response to the environment in different wild-type and mutant backgrounds to build quantitative data sets appropriate for numerical and analytical approaches.

Bio Luc Steels studied linguistics at the University of Antwerp (Belgium) and computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA). His main research field is Artificial Intelligence covering a wide range of intelligent abilities, including vision, robotic behavior, conceptual representations and language. In 1983 he became a professor of computer science at the University of Brussels (VUB). He has been co-founder and chairman (from 1990 until 1995) of the VUB Computer Science Department (Faculty of Sciences). He founded the Sony Computer Science Laboratory in Paris in 1996 and became its first director. Currently he is ICREA research professor at the Institute for Evolutionary Biology (CSIC, UPF). Steels has participated in dozens of large-scale European projects and more than 30 PhD theses have been granted under his direction. He has produced over 200 articles and edited 15 books directly related to his research. During the past decade he has focused on theories for the origins and evolution of language using computer simulations and robotic experiments to discover and test them.

Bio Engineer turned geneticist, François Taddei, Inserm leads a team working on systems biology. He is an acknowledged expert of evolution and argues for interdisciplinary approaches in both research and education. Polytechnic graduate, he is an engineer of the school Ponts, Eaux et Forêts, PhD of genetics and director of research at Inserm. He is the author of numerous publications in international scientific journals. Participating in various working groups on the future of research and higher education, François Taddei has contributed to "France 2025" (Strategic Diagnostics: ten challenges for France) and the reflections of the European Commission. In a report on the education provided to the OECD, François Taddei indicates that in the 21st century everyone should have learned how to learn, cooperate, and use all available knowledge, including those made available by new technologies. He suggested that education systems are based on the "culture of inquiry", a new maieutic, international best practices, and supports the development of sites and tools dedicated to the sharing of experience among innovators. It proposes to use new approaches to participatory science and scientific discovery games to open as many training through research.

Bio Stefan Thurner is full professor for Science of Complex Systems at the Medical University of Vienna, where he founded the Complex Systems Research Group (now Section for Science of Complex Systems) in 2003. Since 2007 he is external professor at the Santa Fe institute. After his PhD in theoretical physics at the Technical University of Vienna in 1995 he held postdoc research positions at Humboldt Universität zu Berlin and Boston University before he joined the University of Vienna in 1999 and later Medical University. In 2001 he got a second PhD in economics at the University of Vienna and his Habilitation in theoretical physics. About this time - strongly influenced by visits to the Santa Fe Institute - he began to shift his focus from theoretical physics to biological and complex systems, which are now his main areas of scientific work. Thurner has (co-) organized several international workshops, conferences and summerschools, and has himself presented more than 150 talks. His work has received broad interest from the media. Thurner serves as a member of several scientific boards. Apart from science Thurner has been active in quantitative financial consulting for financial institutions since 2003 in particular for automated trading strategies.

Bio Jérôme Waldispuhl did his PHD in the computer science laboratory (LIX) of École Polytechnique in France, where he worked on transmembrane protein structure prediction algorithms under the mentorship of Jean-Marc Steyaert. In January 2005, he moved to Boston to work with Peter Clote on RNA secondary structure prediction algorithms and he resumed a work he started during his PhD on the development of algorithms for exploring the RNA mutation landscape. Six month later, he became affiliated to the Bonnie Berger and Srinivas Devadas groups in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) at MIT. In July 2006, he joined the Applied Mathematics Department at MIT as an Instructor and he worked there until June 30th 2009. He joined McGill on September 1st 2009. Now, he is assistant professor in the School of Computer Science of the McGill University and a member of the McGill Centre for Bioinformatics. He remains affiliated to the CSAIL as a research affiliate.

Bio Peng Yin has just joined the Department of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School as an Assistant Professor in January 2010. He is also serving as a Core Faculty member of the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University. He was a senior postdoctoral scholar in bioengineering and computer science at Caltech's Center for Biological Circuit Design, which is part of Caltech's Information Science and Technology initiative. At Caltech, he primarily worked with Prof. Niles A. Pierce and Prof. Erik Winfree. Before joining Caltech, he obtained a Ph.D. in computer science under Prof. John H. Reif and a M.Sc. in molecular cancer biology, both from Duke University. Before coming to Duke, he graduated from Peking University with a B.Sc. in biochemistry and molecular biology and a Bachelor in Economics. His research interests lie at the interface of information science, molecular engineering, and biology. The current focus is to engineer information directed self-assembly of nucleic acid (DNA/RNA) structures and devices, and to exploit such systems to do useful molecular work, e.g. probing and programming biological processes for imaging and therapeutic applications.

Science Créativité Interdisciplinarité Recherche & Education

The SCIRE Association was founded at the initiative of two researchers from INSERM, Franc ois Taddei and Ariel Lindner, with the active support of the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation, to develop research projects, teaching and interdisciplinary scientific interaction, focusing on the interfaces with life sciences. Since its conception, the activity of SCIRE is dedicated to funding activities within the Center for Research & Interdisciplinarity (CRI). The association has the Bettencourt Schueller as principal sponsor, and has received several grants from other partners. The SCIRE is the partner of Sorbonne Paris Cite in the Institut Innovant de Formation par la Recherche (IIFR) project.

Centre de Recherche Interdisciplinaire

The CRI, located at the Medical Faculty of Paris descartes University, hosts the Frontiers in Life Sciences FdV Bachelor Program, the Interdisciplinary Approaches to Life Sciences master program (M1 and M2 AIV) and the European Interdisciplinary Liliane Bettencourt “Frontiers in Life Sciences” PhD program (FdV). The CRI blends teaching with research and hosts as well the Evolutionary Systems Biology INSERM team, lead by Franc ois Taddei and the AXA-Paris Descartes chair on “Systems approach to individual differences in longevity”. Through the CRI student clubs, students-initiated projects emerged to promote informal and intensive interactions between students and experts such as the award-winning Paris iGEM team and the Interdisciplinary Approaches to Web Sciences Program. As direct continuation of these multiple and successful experiences, the CRI will host the nascent Institute for Innovating Learning through Research Institute (Institut Innovant de Formation par la Recherche) project.
