The Position of the Sun at Different Times
of the Day
What makes it seem to happen?
We can see that the sun seems to move across the sky starting in the east in the early morning and then toward the west as the day ends.
West East
HOW DOES IT HAPPEN?
The sun does not move. It’s earth's rotation that gives as night and day. Earth rotates counter clockwise once in 24 hours. The spinning of the earth around its own axis causes day and night. Axis an imaginary line about which a body rotates. Sunlight shines only on the half of earth facing the sun. The half has day and the other half is dark and has night. It takes 24 hours to complete one rotation. Rotation is the action of rotating around an axis or center. as earth turns, it “appears” that the sun is moving across the sky.
Shadow cause by the sun move as earth rotates counter clockwise on its axis. Shadows are long in the morning and late afternoon due to the position of the sun relative to a position on earth.
(6:00 AM) the sun is low in the sky in the East and the shadow is long. it is 170 cm long.
SUNRISE
(9:00 AM) as the sun gets higher in the sky, the shadow is at its shortest. it is 45 cm long.
MORNING
(12:00 Noon) the sun is at its highest point in the sky. the shadow is at its shortest. it is 25cm long.
MID-DAY
(3:00 PM) as the sun gets lower in the sky, the shadow gets longer again. it is 45cm long.
