SEPARATION OF IMMISCIBLE

LIQUIDS BY SEPARATING FUNNEL

Page 2: Separation of miscible and immiscible liquids

This is the instrument used to separate a mixture of immiscible liquids.

As the two liquids are separate layersit is easy to separate them. The method is…..

SEPERATING FUNNEL

Page 3: Separation of miscible and immiscible liquids

Methods

• i. Pour the mixture into the funnel.

• ii. Let it stand undisturbed for sometime

so that the layers get separated.

• iii. Open the stopcock of the separating

funnel pour out the lower layer

carefully.• iv. Close the stopcock as

the top layer reaches it.

Distillation

.Distillation is a method of separating mixtures, based on differences in volatilities of components in a boiling liquid mixture.

.Examples: acetone and water, ethanol and water. In acetone water mixture, the boiling point of acetone is 56 𝑜𝐶and that of water is 100 . 𝑜𝐶

Science behind distillation

• i. The low boiling liquid is evaporated first.

• ii. Its vapours are passed through the condenser and changed to pure liquid form.

• iii. This is collected in a beaker from the condenser outlet.

• iv. The other component is left in the flask in pure form .
