The Sun and the Earth
Facts on a giant star and our living planet
FIRST INTRODUCTIONS
My name is Excel Ojemen and I am a student of Grade 6. This presentation is about the Sun and the ways to preserve the ozone layer.
The SunOne Giant Star
About the Sun
Age: 4.6 Billion Years
Type: Yellow Dwarf (G2V)
Diameter: 1,392,684 km
Circumference at Equator: 4,370,005.6 km
Mass: 1,989,100,000,000,000,000,000 billion kg (333,060 x Earth)
Surface Temperature: 5500 °C
Advantages of the Sun• Sun is the ultimate source of power or
energy.• The Sun's gravity controls the planets'
rotation, revolution and precession.• The Sun plays an important role in
maintaining climatic order in Earth.(winds, rainfall, temperature, humidity etc.)
• The Sun rays can be turned into solar electricity.
Disadvantages of the Sun• It cause cancer through
excessive sunburn.• It emits harmful UV
(ultraviolet) rays through the depletion of the ozone layer thanks to pollution.
• Excessive amount of heat weakens our body which can function beneficially only at an optimum temperature.
The EarthWhat a wonderful PLANET!
The Ozone LayerA layer of air protecting us from excessive skin cancer.
What is the Ozone LayerThe ozone layer is a layer in the earth's stratosphere at an altitude of about 10 km (6.2 miles) containing a high concentration of ozone, which absorbs most of the ultraviolet radiation reaching the earth from the sun.
*Ozone:a colourless unstable toxic gas formed from oxygen
The Dangers of the Depletion of Ozone Layer• Skin cancer would be a major disease.• The water on the Earth will quickly get evaporated• Too much heavy rainfall which can cause floods• Excessive heat rays from the sun (will cause skin cancer)• Most importantly, humanity won’t survive
What do we do to deplete the ozone layer
• Greenhouse gases
• Smoke emitted from cars
• Smoke emitted from factories
• Global warming
Greenhouse gasesA gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation. Carbon dioxide and chlorofluorocarbons are examples of greenhouse gases.
*Greenhouse effect is the trapping of the sun's warmth in a planet's lower atmosphere
*Infrared radiation is energy in the region of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum at wavelengths longer than those of visible light, but shorter than those of radio waves.*The electromagnetic radiation spectrum is the complete range of the wavelenghts of electromagnetic radiation
How we can help the ozone layer
• By not wasting water.
• By planting trees.
• By recycling (not burning waste).
• By using eco-friendly resources.
• By keeping our cars in good service so they wouldn’t emit too much smoke.
• And most importantly, by keeping our environment clean.
I HOPE YOU’VE LEARNT SOMETHING?
THANK YOU!
