Introduc/on  •  ELIXIR  UK  training  ac/vi/es  have  focussed  on  the  12

Training  Sectors  we  defined.

•  These  are  there  to  provide  thema/c  groupings  through  which  we  can  support  training  ac/vi/es,  and  that  can  help  guide  us  on  the  defini/on  of  five  strategic  priority  areas.

•  ELIXIR  UK’s  training  deliverables  are  /ed  to  the  defini/on  of  these  five  strategically-‐important  areas  of  training  need  –  proposed  here.

•  The  defini/on  and  pursuit  of  five  strategic  areas  aKer  consulta/on  was  described  in  the  RC  funding  applica/on.

Page 4: Training priorities for ELIXIR UK by Lee Larcombe

How  did  we  approach  this?

•  Talking  to  research  communi/es  •  Surveys  (both  ours  and  others)  •  Engaging  with  Industry  •  Listening  to  experts  (sector  leads  and  others)

•  Observing  funding  trends/ini/a/ves

Iden/fying  Strategic  Training  Needs

The  following  slide  shows  the  current  Training  Sectors  along  with  five  proposed  strategic  priority  training  areas  for  ELIXIR  UK:

–  Clinical  Genomics  –  Structural  Bioinforma/cs  –  Advanced  Scien/fic  Skills  –  Applied  Genomics  –  Metabolomics

And  two  ongoing,  overarching  areas  of  ac/vity:

–  Transla/onal  Engagement  –  Community  Support  (TeSS)

*towards  PoW5  Objec/ve  5

*Towards  PoW5  Objec/ves  4  &  6

*The  training  objec/ves  from  the  ELIXIR  hub  PoW5  document  are  included  as  an  appendix  to  this  document  –  these  are  not  all  specific  goals  for  ELIXIR  UK  to  address  alone

Mapping  exis/ng  efforts

The  following  slide  shows  how  the  exis/ng  efforts  and  ac/vi/es  in  ELIXIR  UK  training  sectors  fit  into  the  proposed  strategic  priori/es    Everyone  has  a  role  in  these  strategic  priority  areas  moving  forward,  but  it  is  expected  that  work  will  s/ll  be  developed/supported  within  the  current  thema/c  sectors  alongside.

Proposed  Order  of  Priority  The  ELIXIR  UK  roadmap  requires  a  rank  order  of  priority  to  dictate  implementa/on  –  linked  to  milestone  points.  This  does  not  mean  that  #1  is  more  important  than  #2  –  it  is  the  case  that  we  can  ac/on,  to  the  point  of  repor/ng,  #1  quicker  than  #2.  Priority  is  therefore  suggested  as:

1.  Structural  Bioinforma/cs  2.  Advanced  Scien/fic  Skills  3.  Applied  Genomics  4.  Clinical  Genomics  5.  Metabolomics

Implementa/on  should  mean  our  ability  to  report  outputs  by  the  milestone  points  –  not  when  we  start  ac/vi/es.      This  rank  order  reflects  both  our  likely  ability  to  have  reportable  output  AND  the  6meliness/urgency  of  need.

Evidence/Ra/onale  The  following  slide  presents  an  example  of  the  evidence  and  ra/onale  to  jus/fy  the  proposal  of  a  strategic  priority  areas  –  this  is  incomplete  and  s/ll  developing.    Also  iden/fied  are  people  that  might  lead  these  ac/vi/es  and  a  member  of  the  industry  panel  to  support  each    It  is  expected  that  each  area  will  build  a  working  party  around  the  Lead  and  Industry  coordinators

Page 15: Training priorities for ELIXIR UK by Lee Larcombe

Example:  Advanced  Scien/fic  Skills  Community  ra/onale

•  Industry  survey  • 86.8%  use  excel  for  data  analysis  • 32.4%  use  R/Matlab  • Only  26.5%  write  programmes  • 33%  have  no  Bioinforma/cs  support

• 64%  are  not  confident/aware  of  sta/s/cs

• 50%  want  more  experimental  design

• 61%  want  more  stats  • 57%  want  more  data  manipula/ons  skills

• 67%  want  more  data  visualisa/on  • Mick  Watson’s  survey  •  Interest  in  more  R  training  • Training  in  Unix/Linux

Funding  ra/onale

• BBSRC  • Data  driven  biology

• NERC  (2012  skills  survey)  • Cri/cal  skills  gaps  • Data  management  • Numeracy

• BIS  -‐  Science  Industry  Partnership

People

• Lead:  TBC  •  Industry:  GSK–  Samiul  Hasan

Gabriella  Rus/ci  will  talk  more  about  the  Industry  Survey

Page 17: Training priorities for ELIXIR UK by Lee Larcombe

Reaching  out  to  Europe

The  ELIXIR  Training  Coordinator  Commipee  will  be  key  to  this  –  Rita  Hendricusdo#r  will  talk  about  this  more

Page 18: Training priorities for ELIXIR UK by Lee Larcombe

Building  Interna/onal  Reach

•  SoKware  carpentry  •  Data  carpentry  •  SCF  •  NIH  BD2K  ini/a/ves

Current  training  achievements  in  these  sectors  will  feed  into  Advanced  Scien/fic  Skills  –  becoming  a  model  for  interna/onal  outreach  in  other  priority  areas

Page 19: Training priorities for ELIXIR UK by Lee Larcombe

Next  Steps    •  Present  these  to  the  Industry  panel  for  support

•  Build  on  the  Evidence/Ra/onale

•  Define  the  working  groups  for  each  area

•  Start  to  iden/fy  European  Node  partners

•  Get  working  !
