What is Endocytosis?

Materials in the extracellular fluid are engulfed by a vesicle, which then empties its contents in the intracellular fluid

Endocytosis• Pinocytosis: plasma membrane

folds inward, forming a pinocytic vesicle

• Phagocytosis: plasma membrane engulfs the solid material

• Receptor mediated endocytosis: specific molecules bind to specialized receptors

Pinocytosis

• Extracellular fluid• Rich in nutrients

Phagocytosis

• Larger particles• Lysosome joins the vesicle, empties

its digestive enzyme to break down the particles
