IntroIntroI love going to the city. I love the energy, the people, the

sounds, smells, and of course all the beautiful sights! So many people in such a small space.

I also love spending time outdoors. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and it gives me time to think without the distractions of laundry, housework or the TV or internet!

I decided to create a cityscape series which would combine these two aspects of our society. Earth tones cut into the shapes of skyscrapers…and a sun make from a spiral. Have fun!

Supplies and PrepSupplies and Prep You will need:

– Decorative art papers (variety of dark, middle, and light colored art papers) – Canvas (this project can be done on almost any size, but I recommend at least 11x14)– One inch, flat paint brush. – Scissors – Acrylic matte medium mixed with water (3/4 medium, ¼ water) – Paper towels, small container of water, rag or old towel

To prepare for this project, cover a table with newspaper or an old tablecloth. Freezer paper or was paper taped to a cookie sheet works well.

Wear an apron or old clothing.

City-Scape ProjectCity-Scape Project First, do the background/sky, using lighter colors and

paper with “inclusions” (pieces of grass or leaves etc.) Cut the paper into squares and rectangles, varying the

shapes and sizes. Next, work on the darker colors. For the bottom section,

cut the paper into longer rectangles, then use a square shape for the middle section. Cut taller rectangles for the buildings.

When you’re ready to start gluing, start from the top of the canvas, and work your way down, overlapping when necessary. Be sure to wrap the paper around the edge of the canvas.

To glue, spread matte medium on the back of the paper, making sure it soaks in.

Then transfer the paper onto the canvas, adding another coat of glue to the top of the paper. This seals the paper.

Be sure to press on the paper, gently, to remove all air bubbles.

Allow the collage to dry for a few days. (optional) When dry, coat with two layers of water-based

poly urethane. Allow to dry between coats.

HINT: You can find lots of decorative art papers on the internet. Some companies offer a sample book of the papers they sell. This will make it much easier for you to determine the texture of the various papers available.

This is how the background will look before putting in the

skyscrapers.

But which papers should you buy?? Over the years, I have learned what work best for me by trial and error. But my

favorites are Lokta, Japanese Lace, Mulberry, Thai Mango, and Banana paper.
