How to open a Foreign Currency Depositors account in

Bank of China

Bring your passport with you.

.Ask the bank assistant to give you a form of “ Foreign Currency Depositors” (活期一本通). Fill

in the information include of:

Take a queue number from number machine by pushing the bottom of “ Personal Deposit”, and

wait for the turn.

Hang over the form, your passport, and 100rmb to cashier, tell her/him which kind of foreign

currency account you would like to open (ie. U.S dollar or Euro, etc), then you will need to sign

your signature and input a 6 numbers code several times.

By the end, you will receive:

A bankbook plus a debit card with100RMB deposit.

Several registration forms

A note with the English name of Issue Bank written

Now you can

Transfer foreign currency from aboard to China by providing to the other side:

The English name, swift code, address of the Issue Bank of China,

Account name

Account numbers (use the numbers on the first page right up corner of the bankbook for foreign

currency transfer, the numbers on the debit card can be used for RMB only.)

Note: need to confirm with the aboard bank for arriving date. Bank of China will notify you only on

the first time when there is a different kind of foreign currency arrive in your account. (For example,

you opened a U.S dollar account, the bank will call you only if there is some Euro arrives. Then

you need to take your passport to the Issue Bank to open a Euro account on the same bankbook

or you can’t take out the money.)

Transfer foreign currency from China to aboard by providing:

The English name, swift code, address of the aboard bank

Account name

Account numbers

Note: normally it takes 5 workdays to complete the transfer.

How to transfer money in/out of China：

Money can be transferred in/out of China by telegraphic transfer; you need to bring your passport

and fill in a form under bank’s instruction. The form includes the information of your name, contact

information, account number etc. If you need help from the bank, the following translation might be

useful for you:

1) I want to transfer the money out of China. 我想汇款到国外。

2) How can I receive the money send from other countries? 我怎么才能收到国外汇款？

[Q] Whether the Bank of China provides expats with an ATM card to withdraw money from

the hole in the wall? I know they get a debit card, but I don't know about the ATM card.

[A] Debit card is ATM card. It can be used on ATMs including ATM from non-bank of china

(different bank will charge a little more transfer fee) and POSS in shops and supermarkets.

[Q]How much money can be withdrawn in one day from the ATM machine?

[A] One day adding up to no more than 5000rmb. If you need more, you have to go to counter.

[Q] Can money be transferred both in and out of China directly between banks?

[A] Yes. But OUT has limited amount because china is a capitalism central control country. One

year adding up to no more than 50000USD can be transferred out of China by one foreigner.

Only district sub-branch bank can offer service for money transfer out of china.

By calling Bank of China hotline, the online function needs to be applied and activated in the bank

with account book, its password and passport.

Because of high economic crime, a new secure package which started from March, 2008 will be

offered by bank, including USB key, driver and instruction only in Chinese. This software needs to

be installed into personal computer and each logging in will be requested.

Unfortunately, the secure system is only in Chinese.

After logging in security system, you can reach online banking logging in page which is also in

Chinese.
