Google's Penguin

Get A New Domain

A proven way to recover from Google's Penguin update is to buy a domain, move your content to

that domain, clean up your content, setup a 301 redirect and then initiate a new link building

campaign.

In this screenshot based report, I will show you how to do everything needed.

We will start by finding a domain.

Next, we will setup new hosting.

After that, we will migrate the old content to the new domain.

Once that's done, we will setup a 301 redirect on the original domain.

And lastly, we will initiate a new linking campaign to the new domain.

Find a domain

You have 2 choices, begin with a brand new domain and build authority to it or begin with a

domain that already has authority associated with it.

My obvious choice is to leverage an aged domain with authority already.

I use Register Compass for this.

Dashboard

When you login to Register Compass, you will see this dashboard.

First thing you will want to is search for a new domain based on your keyword criteria.

Domain Search Dashboard

This screen gives you an overwhelming number of filter options.

The nice thing is that most aren't really needed.

Page 6: Penguin recovery

Criteria

In the initial search, I enter my keyword.

I checkmark .com, .net., and .org. I don't care about other extensions.

Lastly, I want to search for all domains that are expired from 2009 and back.

Once filters are set, click Find Domains.

I am only concerned with Expired Domains. You can click the hyperlinked number to see your

options on this page or click the Excel button to download the list for offline filtering.

Page 7: Penguin recovery

Every domain in this list that hasn't been dropped (we'll get into that in a minute) is a candidate.

Since we have the domain authority already available to us, I will use that as an initial filter. The

domains with the highest authority are the ones most interesting to me.

Page 8: Penguin recovery

http://letter.ly/fromtheinsidePenguin Recovery - 8

After domain authority, other interesting criteria is Google Indexed pages (how many pages are

found in Google) and Majestic Index (how many pages Majestic SEO shows as being indexed).

My preference is Google first, followed by Majestic.

Domain found!

I quickly found a domain thats at least 3 yrs. old, has authority and indexed pages.

That was FAST!

Check to ensure domain has never dropped

When looking at expired domains, the deal-breaker is if the domain has ever dropped.

We find this out by visiting http://www.domaintools.com/.

Page 9: Penguin recovery

http://letter.ly/fromtheinsidePenguin Recovery - 9

Just enter your prospective domain name and click Search for Domain.

Dropped or No?

If you don't see a notice that the domain has been dropped, then you are good to go.

Register your domain

It's time to register your new (or aged) domain.

The best registrar online that very few people know about is http://www.yourcheapdomains.com/.

Page 10: Penguin recovery

http://letter.ly/fromtheinsidePenguin Recovery - 10

I've been using them since the year 2000 and have never been disappointed.

Search for your domain

The first thing you need to do when you visit the registrar is to ensure the domain you've been

researching is indeed available.

On the rare occasion, you will find out that it's been taken.

No worries, just go back to the research phase.

If it is available, then you will see a message like the one in this screenshot.

At this point, click Add and go through the checkout process.

You will be presented with a few upsells, you can choose to take them or not based on your needs.

I personally never take the upsells.

Setup New Hosting

Once you have your domain registered, you need to setup hosting.

This can be the same hosting you previously had, but my suggestion is to move to a new host.

Recommended Host

There are thousands of hosting accounts out there.

My #1 preference is a dedicated server, but I realize that's cost prohibitive to most people.

My second choice is Brain Host which is very affordable and with the best support in the hosting

business.

Create a new account

If using Brain Host, the following steps will be slightly different.

The PROCESS is the same, so please keep that in mind.

Page 12: Penguin recovery

Enter your domain info

On this screen, you need to enter your domain, proposed username (will be autofilled), a

password (or the system can generate one for you), and your email address.

Once you complete the form, you will be sent all of your account info.

Page 13: Penguin recovery

Time to create your database

Once your account has been created, you need to create a database to be used in the site

migration.

If using a dedicated server, make sure you access CPanel.

Once in Cpanel, click MySQL Databases.

In the field provided, add your new database name. This can be anything you want.

Page 14: Penguin recovery

http://letter.ly/fromtheinsidePenguin Recovery - 14

Next, enter a username and password, then click Create User.

Once your username and password are created, you have to add the user (your username) to the

database that you created.

Page 15: Penguin recovery

http://letter.ly/fromtheinsidePenguin Recovery - 15

Choose All Privileges and then Make Changes.

Once done, you will get a confirmation like the one above.

Make sure you copy this information as you will need it in the next step.

Move Old Website To New Domain

In this step, we will move all of our site files from one domain to the next.

I'm assuming you are using Wordpress... and this tutorial will use a tool that will move your

Wordpress site flawlessly for you.

If you are using another CMS or static HTML, then I suggest hiring someone to migrate your site to

the new domain/host for you (unless you have the technical skills to do it yourself).

Migrate Your Site

My tool of choice for migrating a Penguin afflicted site is Manage WP.

When you login to Manage WP, you will want to click Install or Clone Wordpress on the sidebar.

Page 17: Penguin recovery

http://letter.ly/fromtheinsidePenguin Recovery - 17

Choose the Penguin afflicted site that you wish to clone (backup).

Unless you wish to exclude or include files and folders, just click Create Backup.

Page 18: Penguin recovery

http://letter.ly/fromtheinsidePenguin Recovery - 18

Click New Site.

Enter your new sites hosting information.

Page 19: Penguin recovery

http://letter.ly/fromtheinsidePenguin Recovery - 19

Enter your new hosts database information.

After you click Clone, the process of migrating your site can take 30 seconds to 1 minute. When

done, you will see the image shown above.

Setup 301 Redirect On Old Domain

A 301 redirect is the most efficient and Search Engine Friendly method for webpage redirection.

It's not that hard to implement and it should preserve your search engine rankings for that

particular page. If you have to change file names or move pages around, it's the safest option. The

code "301" is interpreted as "moved permanently".

http://www.webconfs.com/how-to-redirect-a-webpage.php

The 301 Structure (technical)

Create a .htaccess file with the below code, it will ensure that all your directories and pages of your

old domain will get correctly redirected to your new domain.

The .htaccess file needs to be placed in the root directory of your old website (i.e the same

directory where your index file is placed)

Options +FollowSymLinks

RewriteEngine on

RewriteRule (.*) http://www.newdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Please REPLACE www.newdomain.com in the above code with your actual domain name.

In addition to the redirect I would suggest that you contact every backlinking site to modify their

backlink to point to your new website.

Note* This .htaccess method of redirection works ONLY on Linux servers having the Apache

Mod-Rewrite moduled enabled.

Page 21: Penguin recovery

http://letter.ly/fromtheinsidePenguin Recovery - 21

How to add it

From within Cpanel, click 'File Manager'.

Next, click the folder icon next to public_html.

The file we need to edit is the .htaccess file. Click the file name and then Edit File.

Page 22: Penguin recovery

http://letter.ly/fromtheinsidePenguin Recovery - 22

If you're using Wordpress, then you will have a lot of data in this file.

All you need to do is delete it.

Page 23: Penguin recovery

Ensure you change the domain to your NEW domain.

Options +FollowSymLinks

RewriteEngine on

RewriteRule (.*) http://NEWDOMAIN.com/$1 [R=301,L]

That all there is too it!

While this looks very technical, it's not as bad as it seems.

Next, we look at the new linking plan...

Page 24: Penguin recovery

http://letter.ly/fromtheinsidePenguin Recovery - 24

Link Building To New Domain

In addition to the 301 redirect to an aged domain, the way we link to our new site has to change as

well.

Ideally, my Everygreen Traffic Formula Traffic Kickstart is the ultimate solution followed by...

The Ultimate Link Management System

If you are not using Link Emperor, then you may be missing out.

There are several reasons why I use them.

1. 100% automated

2. Allows you to adjust linking profile

3. Services that they use to deliver links are always tested for quality. If a service performs

substandard, then they are removed from their service providers list.

4. SIMPLE TO USE.

Dashboard

When you first login, you will be presented with a simple to understand dashboard.

You can add new campaigns, check your rankings, adjust your link building profile, and update

Page 25: Penguin recovery

http://letter.ly/fromtheinsidePenguin Recovery - 25

your account from here.

Adjusting the link profile

It's rumored that one of Penguin's penalties has come from an over-optimization of off-page anchor

text.

With LE, we have the ability to adjust the settings to adapt for that.

The profile

In my tests, 40% of the inbound links use direct anchor text, 40% with a modifier used with the

anchor text, and 20% with totally random terms.

We get naked links (also important) from Press Releases and Social Media.

Page 26: Penguin recovery

http://letter.ly/fromtheinsidePenguin Recovery - 26

Adding a new campaign

After we setup our new site and set the 301 redirect, we need to begin the linking campaign to this

new domain.

Click New Campaign from the Campaigns tab.

Give the campaign a name.

Choose your location.

Choose the most appropriate category.

And lastly, assign a value to the campaign. Think of this number as a bid amount you would use in

Google Adwords. The more competitive the market, the higher you will bid.

Page 27: Penguin recovery

http://letter.ly/fromtheinsidePenguin Recovery - 27

This is where the magic happens...

After you create the campaign, click on Sites then Add Sites(s).

Here you will enter the name of your site.

Add your domain.

And then choose THE GOOGLE ANALYTICS ACCOUNT FROM THE SITE WE JUST 301

Page 28: Penguin recovery

http://letter.ly/fromtheinsidePenguin Recovery - 28

REDIRECTED.

This will pull all of the keywords and landing pages found in Google Analytics and pick up the

linking campaign where it left off.

Pretty cool, huh?

Once you've done this, you are done.

You literally don't have to do anything from a linking standpoint again (unless you wish to adjust

the campaign at some point).

I hope you found this guide useful.

Oh, and if you want to join my underground insiders-only email list, then you can do so for just

$4.95 per month here...
