Solar Ovens • Solar ovens, also known as solar cookers, are

devices that use the heat of the sun, allowing people to be able to cook or bake their food outdoors without consuming fuel or electricity.

• The best thing about solar ovens is that they use the natural energy and heat coming from the sun, and there is no need for batteries or any type of fuel in order for them to function. Therefore, a solar oven costs nothing to operate, and it can be extremely beneficial for low income families who must save on their electricity or gas bills.

• Especially during such times of economical crisis worldwide, and when the resources of our planet are getting scarcer, any “green”, eco-friendly device is extremely welcome in plenty of households. There is a misconception according to which only the poorer strata of the society would use such devices, but this is not true. People who are quite well off and who respect the fact that protecting our natural resources and our environment is extremely important will always look for ways they can make this world a little better.

• The solar ovens are generally quite cheap to manufacture, and most of them come at fair prices. Many people, however, would rather build their own devices. There are also “high-tech” solar ovens available, which operate with solar batteries. These are more expensive to manufacture, but they will heat and cook the food even when the oven is not in direct and strong sunlight.

• People who do not want to trouble themselves with manufacturing such an oven, but would gladly try it out, can simply buy one online from specialty shops. They usually sell these ovens together with all the important accessories, such as the reflectors and the pot itself.

• People living in areas where the temperatures are high most times of the year are the ones who can enjoy the benefits of such an oven the most. Nevertheless, since the cooker uses only natural light to produce heat, the entire cooking, baking or frying process will take longer than usual.

• There are many types of solar ovens available, such as the box cooker with a transparent glass top, the panel solar ovens that use reflective panels (cardboard and aluminum foil system), or ovens with paraboloidal reflectors (parabola shaped device). There have also been developed quite a few hybrid cooker models that function with both electrical energy and with solar energy.

• The choices are plenty, the costs are low, and the benefits are tremendous. So why not get a solar oven (or build one) for your home?
