Overview

• Although Sky and the various satellite packages remain the most popular way to view alternatives to the main 5 terrestrial channels, we’re exceptionally lucky to have a great deal of choice in this regard.

• Even better still is the fact that Freesat and Freeview now offer us the opportunity of viewing some of the main satellite channels for free.

• But which of the two main Freeview aerials should you choose? The secret lies with being able to consider the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Freeview

• The majority of televisions now come with Freeview built in. In addition, there is a service known as Freeview+ which offers the same channels and viewing but also the ability to pause and rewind as well as accessing streaming services such as Netflix.

• Choosing Freeview gives you 50 channels and 24 radio stations, it’s subscription free and the only fee you’ll have to pay is the actual cost of buying it in the first place.

• In addition, as has been mentioned, it comes with the ability to pause and rewind live TV (which, anyone who’s had Sky or Virgin will confirm is a habit you soon come to rely upon). In addition you can record using the box.

• However, it’s not all good. In comparison with the other free packages, those 50 channels represent the smallest amount available on a similar package.

• There are also those who say that Freeview is overly complex and that prices vary so dramatically that some boxes may not offer value for money.

Freesat

• Freesat works in the same way as Sky but is free of subscriptions, meaning the only payment is the upfront cost of purchase.

• In comparison to the above option, it delivers 150 television stations, including the main 5, some lifestyle, children’s and music channels. Because it’s satellite based, reviews have found that the picture quality is far more reliable.

• In addition, there’s the “freetime” guide which works as a screen guide to what’s on, what’s showing later, the current highlights and as a guide to upcoming features. It is from here that you can play, rewind, pause and record.

• However there are some disadvantages. As has been mentioned, Freesat is satellite based which means that you’ll need a satellite to receive your programmes.

• This is great if you already have a satellite but if not, you could be kept waiting. There are also some missing channels. Although it boasts 150, some of the more popular channels such as Dave don’t feature.

• In addition, although there is the option of a channel for on-demand programming these aren’t all available on all boxes, so if you plan to use these excessively it’s worth ensuring they’re all available on the box you’re choosing.
