ZINC PHOSPHATEZinc Phosphate coatings serve as a base for organic coatings, such as paint or lacquer, lubricating oils, or waxes. The coating provides minimal corrosion protection—it’s purpose is to provide a crystal structure to which the subsequent organic coating, oil or wax can mechanically bond. A zinc phosphate coating can be gray or black, with these colors deepened by subsequent application of oil. For defense applications, this finish can reduce reflectivity of base materials. Zinc phosphate also goes by the trade name Parcoat, is sometimes called parkerizing in reference to finishing on firearms, or may be called phosphatizing.

CHEM FILM. . .PROTECTS ALUMINUM.. .BASE FOR ORGANIC COATINGS...APPLIED BY DIPPING, SPRAYING OR BRUSHINGChem Film, sometimes called Alodine or Iridite, is a chemical conversion coating that is used to passivate aluminum. It protects aluminum substrates from corrosion and serves as a base for organic coatings while leaving dimensions unchanged. Chem Film is applied by dipping, spraying or brushing. It is sometimes applied alongside Type II Anodizing and can be used to repair minor damage to anodized surfaces. The resultant coating is dependent on the substrate condition and not intended for decorative use.

Chem film per MIL-DTL-5541 Class 3 is electrically conductive. The best corrosion protection is provided by chem film perMIL-DTL-5541 Class 1A.
