Plot A thief who steals business secrets through the use of

dream-sharing technology. Dominic Cobb is a industrial spy who can get

information he needs by getting into the person’s mind through their dreams.

Cobb has to try achieve to implant something, a process called ‘inception’.

Sound The film starts with

dramatic, strong orchestral music played at the start like heavy strings.

This builds tension and confusion for the audience

We start to hear the sound of splashing waves – creates a calming effect for the audience

Next scene – we hear diegetic sound of a spinning toy and a gun placed on the table.

Editing The use of jump cuts used in

this thriller from one action to another is quite fast.

This is effective as it builds a sense of realism to the scene.

No music or special effects were added.

CAMERA Close-up There are close-ups used in the opening

of the film. This extreme close-up shot was to

emphasise the importance of an object or allows the audience to read the characters facial expression/emotion which then creates tension.

It shows he is confused and tired. This shot is effective as it makes the

audience think about what happened why he’s there.

Wide Shot The film starts with a shot of the sea

which is also an establishing shot. This shows the audience the location of

where the main character is or where the current situation is.

The waves are very calming and relaxing which creates a effect on the audience as soon as they watch it.

MISE-EN-SCENECostume/Props When the soldier is checking

the body on the floor we can see a prop is used which is a gun .

This is important as it shows that it gives him power.

The clothing tells us that it is poor looking clothes which shows us that he has no importance.

However the other man wearing a expensive suit tells us that he may have a higher status.

Lighting & Colour In the beginning of the scene

there is use of high key lighting with the children playing on the beach which gives a positive image to the audience.

The lighting changes in this shot. There is low key lighting used as well which creates confusion for the audience. The man is shown to be superior as he has men in suits protecting him as guards.

Setting There are many wide shots used throughout this

scene which gives the audience an insight to where it is exactly set.

We can tell easily what sort of location it because of the mountains and a beach.

It was set mainly in France but had other location such as: UK and Japan.
