Viruses, Trojans, Malware, cookies – what do they all mean??

So, what exactly is a virus and what are spyware and malware?

Virus:A program that enters a computer usually without the knowledge of the operator. Some viruses are mild and only cause messages to appear on the screen, but others are destructive and can wipe out the computer's memory or cause more severe damage. source: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/computer+virus

Managing the security on your computer is a very important issue.

There are many different brands of antivirus and malware removal programs out there which can be quite confusing to many of us

Spyware:Spyware is software that aids in gathering information about a person or organization without their knowledge and that may send such information to another entity without the consumer's consent, or that asserts control over a computer without the consumer's knowledge."Spyware" is mostly classified into four types: system monitors, trojans, adware, and tracking cookies. Spyware is mostly used for the purposes such as; tracking and storing internet users' movements on the web; serving up pop-up ads to internet users. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spyware

Malware:Malware is an umbrella term for multiple kinds of software including spyware, viruses, and adware. The general rule is that if a program installs itself without user knowledge and/or consent, it is considered malware. The exact purpose of any piece of malware is dependent on what type of malware it is. Spyware gathers data and reports it back to somewhere. Adware displays unsolicited ads and other undesired marketing. Viruses have a whole host of sub-classes that are determined by how they infect a computer and what they do once they have done so.Source: http://www.csus.edu/irt/faq/Software-and-Hardware/antivirus-and-antimalware/index.html#Malware-Defined

Spam:There are two main types of spam, and they have different effects on Internet users. Cancellable Usenet spam is a single message sent to 20 or more Usenet newsgroups. (Through long experience, Usenet users have found that any message posted to so many newsgroups is often not relevant to most or all of them.) Usenet spam is aimed at "lurkers", people who read newsgroups but rarely or never post and give their address away. Usenet spam robs users of the utility of the newsgroups by overwhelming them with a barrage of advertising or other irrelevant posts. Furthermore, Usenet spam subverts the ability of system administrators and owners to manage the topics they accept on their systems.Email spam targets individual users with direct mail messages. Email spam lists are often created by scanning Usenet postings, stealing Internet mailing lists, or searching the Web for addresses. Email spams typically cost users money out-of-pocket to receive. Many people - anyone with measured phone service - read or receive their mail while the meter is running, so to speak. Spam costs them additional money. On top of that, it costs money for ISPs and online services to transmit spam, and these costs are transmitted directly to subscribers. One particularly nasty variant of email spam is sending spam to mailing lists (public or private email discussion forums.) Because many mailing lists limit activity to their subscribers, spammers will use automated tools to subscribe to as many mailing lists as possible, so that they can grab the lists of addresses, or use the mailing list as a direct target for their attacks.Source: http://spam.abuse.net/overview/whatisspam.shtml
