HOMEWORK•Discuss the new platform you explored.• Which platform?• How did you acclimate to it?• What did you find it useful for?
•What observations did you have of people in your network & their usage?• What kind of content & interactions did you observe?• What lessons did you take?
• When someone posts something & connects another user on the platform to the post.• In photos, it’s often done by selecting a “Tag” button.• In posts, it’s often done by using the “@” followed by the person’s name or
username.• This can be done to individuals, companies, or even places. • The purpose is to• Bring attention to the person/entity you are tagging (“Hey @Peter, great time last nite!”)• Encourage dialogue around the person/entity you are tagging (“What do you think about
@Candidate X?”)• Draw greater attention to their posts (“Everyone’s talking about @KimKardashian, so I
will too!”)
• Use selectively when tagging friends on your network. • Respect privacy
TAGGING
• An informal means of categorizing posts by adding a “#” to it.• Allows the term to be searchable for other posts with
same hashtag.•Hashtags allow individuals to interact with people
they may not know.•Used on most social media platforms (Twitter,
Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn).• Anyone can make up a hashtag. •No one owns a hashtag.• Some people or groups regularly use a specific
hashtag (e.g. #HigherEd #EdTech).

PRESENTING THE PROFESSIONAL ME•Must have:• LinkedIn Account• It is THE professional network.• High SEO value.• Lots of professional spaces within it.
•Should have:• At least 1 social media platform for personal use.• Even if it’s on lockdown.
• Twitter account.• Social media profile on specialized network (e.g.
Academia.edu).
LINKEDIN ACCOUNT•Use it• Regardless of job search.• Professional online presence.
•Completed profile• Filled to the brim.
•Profile picture• Headshot/middle-level shot• Clear & quality picture• Relevant space• Smile
•Regularly Update• People know it’s fresh• Search Engine Optimization

THE ENGAGED PROFESSIONAL ME•Musts:• Regularly post content/discuss your field on:• LinkedIn• Twitter (using relevant hashtags)
• Join professional groups & pages on LinkedIn & Facebook• Engage with people in those groups
• Shoulds:• Regularly read industry news, blogs, social media outlets.• Share what you read.• Blog about your industry.• Create content about your industry on appropriate platforms.• Learn the relevant hashtags within your industry.• Share your blog posts across social media.• Be humble, respectful, & gracious.
• Avoids:• Being the know it all.• Being the spammer

NETWORKING THE PROFESSIONAL ME• Musts• Respond to those who respond to you.• Reach beyond your known network (with hashtags).• Find where conversations are taking place & go there regularly.• Look for opportunities to learn from others.• Take responsibility when you make mistakes.
• Shoulds:• Look for opportunities: direct and indirect.• Look to interview people in your field for content for your outlet.• Comment on other people’s postings & content.• Look for opportunities for collaboration (cross-blog promotions, guest
features on YouTube, etc).• Give recommendations on LinkedIn.
• Avoids:• Too much, too fast.• Abandoning for long stretches• Getting too lost in the numbers; audience-building takes time.
OTHER ADVICE•Find the nodes in your network and interact.•Find the right groups, pages, and hashtags.•Tag (appropriately)•Put yourself out there.•Ask questions; provide answers.•Be respectful—regardless.•Watch the line between being relevant and spamming.
HOMEWORK•Use the hashtag #ShareThis2017 on Twitter by
Sunday.• Post an interesting article about social media
related to your particular interest (e.g. social media & job hunting, social media & geology, etc).
•Read what other people have posted (at least 1-2 items).• Post any questions about social media on Twitter
with course hashtag by Monday OR bring them to next week’s class.
