Target Audience Questionnaire

In order to have the ability to create a suitable, efficient and compact music magazine, I have devised 10 questions of which I've given to fifteen, 14 - 19 year olds in which will help me conclude to what people of this age range are looking for in a successful, affordable and informative music magazine. The fifteen questionnaire participants have been selected at random to give varied opinions in which will individually represents many teens that are my target market and help me create a magazine suitable for many different teens.

1. What gender are you?

It was important to hear from both male and female teens as it's expected to understand their different interests and what they would look for in a music magazine. Of the 15 teens, 8 were female and 7 were male, hearing more or less a fair amount from both genders.

2. What age range do you fall into?

It was important to identify the ages of those within the age range to see how likes, dislikes, opinions etc. varied on what they’d like to see in a music magazine and how this can be generalised in order to create a magazine which will appeal to all between 14-19. My results concluded to most falling in the age range of 16-17, infering that this is the age range I should aim to target my music magazne at.

3. What genre of music do you prefer?

In order to create a music magazine, identifying the favourited genres of music is key in order to produce necessary information for music lovers. My results varied from R&B (4 people), Classic (2 people), Country (1 person), Pop (6 people) and Electronice (2 people). Pop and R&B being the most popular amongst the 15 teens, it’s important to round it down to these to genres, targeting Pop and R&B lovers, a magazine which is up to date on the top charts, new entries and new artists.

4. How often do you read music magazines?

From these results, I have concluded that within the 15 teens, 33.3% (5 people) said that they read a music magazine every fortnight, therefore, when creating my product, I must think about the amount of information I must include, in this case, a series of news over the past two previous weeks.

5. How much are you willing to spend on a magazine?

It was key to find out how much teens are willing to spend on buying a music magazine as not all have a large disposable income; therefore we want to make the magazine assessable and affordable to teens. The majority of teens said they’d invest from 50p to £1 on the magazine due to be allocated only a certain amount a month, therefore it’s important we work with this selling price to attract as many readers as possible.

6. Do you listen to music in the top charts?

It was imperative that I questioned whether music in the top charts is popular amongst the teens so I can then incorporate that in my magazine. The majority said ‘Yes’, therefore I must include info about artists in the top charts and music climbing and falling down in the charts.

7. Do you use social media?

Most of the teens said they were signed up to at least two of the top social media sites. The most popular being Twitter and Instagram- saying this was their primary source of data when finding out, directly from music artists themselves, where they are and info about new albums/music etc.

8. What ways do you find most effective when finding new music?

Given the choice of answering Radio, TV, Magazines, Social media and Family/ friends, the majority answered social media. From this, I must find a more efficient and effective way of teens being able to find out info about new music through the magazine rather than social media;

including info that wouldn’t be published online.

9. What colour scheme do you prefer?

Page 3: Target audience overview

When it comes to teens, it’s not just about the contents of the magazine, the design and appearance of the magazine is equally important- It must be eye catching. Therefore it’s important what colour schemes teens prefer and how I can incorporate this into my magazine.

10. Would you prefer a female or male on the front cover of a music magazine?

The majority of teens would prefer to see a male on the cover of the magazine as they don’t want It to seem to feminine or “girly” with a female on the front.
