Music video analysisTom Odell – Another Love

Tom Odell is centralised permanently throughout the entire duration of his music video for Another Love, he refuses to break eye contact with the audience,

regardless of any discord taking place in the background. This distinct use of synthetic personalisation places Odell in a position of power and control, as well as

succeeding in compelling the audience. The music video lacks any noticeable editing cuts - variation within the setting is introduced using zoom or subtle ellipsis

edits in which objects appear to materialise spontaneously.

The scene begins with a young girl entering and talking to Tom, prior to acting in an affectionate manner towards him. As the shot continues to gradually distance itself from the characters, the girl leaves the room and we are able see her getting changed in the reflection of a mirror. The mirror performs as an opposing perspective - it allows the audience to view the events from a different angle. The process of her costume transition is therefore fully visible, this could signify a change of mood in the couples relationship. She is dressed in more provocative clothing, suggesting that she is revealing more of her true self to him which could potentially be the cause of conflict in the partnership.

Subsequently, she begins to yell at him, clearly mouthing explicit language. The camera shot shakes simultaneously in order to indicate the exact point of turbulence in the relationship. The deterioration of props (in this particular instance, a vase of flowers), sudden low key lighting and chaotic camera zoom reflect this downward spiral. The video is conventional in relation to genre in the sense that it illustrates a dramatic narrative through symbolism and representation, rather than showing realistic occurrences. The setting provides a distressed appearance with a neutral colour scheme, similar to other music videos I have analysed, I will strive to emulate this style of setting in my own project.
