SOFTWARE

Software represents the set of programs that govern the operations of a computer system and make the hardware run. There are two types of software:

1) System software2)Application software

SYSTEM SOFTWARESystem software refers to the

programs that control internal computer operations and make best use of the hardware. There are four types of system software:

1)Operating system2) Language processors3)Device drivers4) Utility software

OPERATING SYSTEM An operating system is a program

which acts as an interface between a user and the hardware.

LANGUAGE PROCESSOR

Computers do not understand any language other then binary language. Therefore it becomes necessary to process a HHL program and this job is done by language processors.

DEVICE DRIVERS

A device driver is a special program that allows the interaction with a specific hardware device.

Utility software are those applications programs that assist the computer by performing house-keeping functions like backing up disk or scanning viruses etc.

UTILITY SOFTWARE

Application software

Is the set of programs necessary to carry out operations for a specified applications.

General purpose software are designed in a way that they may be used by individual users in a manner that it suits their needs and requirements.

GENERAL PURPOSE SOFTWARE

Specialist software are designed to be used for specific tasks such as company payroll, stock control systems, appointment systems, e-commerce sites , etc.

SPECIALIST SOFTWARE

CUSTOMISED SOFTWARE

• Customized software is tailor-made software according to a user’s requirements. This type of software is developed to meet all the requirements specified by the user.
